프래그머티즘 미학에 기초한 ‘예술적 교사’ 이해- 초등교육을 중심으로 (The Artistic Teacher Based on Pragmatist Aesthetics: Focused on Primary Education)

초록

이 연구는 우리 시대의 바람직한 교사상 탐색을 위하여, 프래그머티즘 미학에 기초한 ‘예술적 교사’의 개념적 실천적 의미를 밝히는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위하여 먼저 프래그머티즘 철학의 특징적 성격을 개괄하고, 전통 미학과 구별되는 프래그머티즘 미학의 예술 이해를 제시하였다. 이를 토대로 예술적 교사와 교수 이론을 전개하는 교육학적 논의들을 종합하여 예술적 교사의 개념적 의미를 명료화하였다. 또한 예술적 교사상의 실천적 가능성을 탐색하고자, 세 명의 우수한 초등교사를 대상으로 그들의 구체적인 교수 실천과 교사로서의 성장의 계기들에 대해 관찰과 면담을 통해 탐구하였다. 이론적 실제적 연구의 결과로 프래그머티즘 미학에 기초한 예술적 교사의 특성은 다음 세 가지로 정리된다. 첫째로, 예술의 근원을 자연의 생명활동에서 찾는 점에서, 예술적 교사는 생동하는 자연에의 ‘지각적 감수성’을 더욱 민감하고 풍요롭게 도야해가는 존재이다. 둘째로, 예술의 본질을 연속적 통합적으로 발달하여 완성에 이르는 경험으로 보는 점에서, 예술적 교사는 상호작용적 경험을 ‘공감과 흥미’의 태도로 생동적으로 의미 있게 완성해 가는 존재이다. 셋째로, 예술의 가치를 인간의 총체적 삶의 쇄신에 두는 점에서, 예술적 교사는 구체적인 교실 실천 속에서 ‘창조적 비판적 지성’을 발휘하여 인습화된 관행으로부터 벗어나 새로운 의미와 가치를 실현해가는 존재이다.

영어초록

This study aims at understanding the characteristic traits of the artistic teacher based upon pragmatist aesthetics, which will help us reconstruct the ideal conception of good teacher for today. For this purpose, it begins with illuminating the fundamental philosophic ideas of pragmatism as it is distinguished from the existing philosophic tradition. Then, the characteristic perspective of pragmatist aesthetics is explored with respect to the source, essential nature, and value of art, especially focused upon the major differences from the modernist aesthetic tradition and the analytic aesthetics. Upon this pragmatist philosophic-aesthetic basis, the conceptual meaning of the artistic teacher is elaborated, with reference to some recent pragmatist educational discourses on the artistic teacher or the poetics of teaching. In order to explicate the practical meaning and the realistic potentiality of the artistic teacher, a brief qualitative research is added in a way as to observe the actual practices of 3 best teachers in elementary school and to interview them upon their beliefs on teaching and their own ways of professional development. For the ideal of artistic teacher is to be regarded as having the especial significance for elementary education, while it is to be pursued in all levels of education in general. It is found that the artistic teacher is characterized in the following three educative principles. First, the artistic teacher as characterized by the perceptual sensibility, finds the root of genuine education in nature and life process and utilizes every opportunity to learn about the unity of human life in nature. Secondly, the artistic teacher as characterized by the especial sympathy and interest, purports holistic educational experiences through qualitative interaction with students, in a way as to realize in actual classroom practices the integration of the intellectual, the emotional, the practical, and the aesthetic, and the moving equilibrium of mind and body. Thirdly, the artistic teacher as characterized by creative-critical intelligence, makes efforts to actualize the democratic values in education in a way as to extend meaningful learning experience for every individual student and thereby transforming the social reality.
