초록

지역의 세계화(glocalization)를 통한 지역발전의 성공적인 사례가 영국 스코틀랜드 동남부의 작은 소도시 에딘버러이다. 다양한 에딘버러페스티벌 중에서도 이 프린지는 1947년에 시작된 이래 대중의 인기를 가장 많이 얻고 있으며, 오늘날 프랑스 아비뇽 페스티벌과 함께 세계 양대 공연축제로 손꼽히고 있다. 프린지의 성공 요인으로는 여러 가지를 들 수 있다. 먼저 1958년에 프린지 협회가 세워진 이후에는 그 이전 시기와는 달리 프린지가 조직적으로 작동하기 시작했다. 프린지 협회는 재정을 정부보조금에 크게 의존하지 않았기 때문에 정부의 간섭에서 자유로웠다. 이 때문에 공연팀들은 상당한 수준의 자율성을 누렸다. 또한 1960년대 이래로 프린지협회는 각 참가하는 각 공연단체들에 대해 공평하게 대우함으로써 민주성의 원칙을 확립하였고, 그러한 원칙은 프린지의 명성을 드높였다. 아울러 프린지 협회는 1980년대에 들어서면서 급변하는 상황에 적절히 대처할 수 있는 유연성을 갖추게 되었다. 클럽은 나아가 1999년 봄부터 언론사무소를 확대 운영하여 프린지를 홍보하는데 더욱 매진하였다. 나아가 2000년대에 접어들면서 그 동안 금기시되었던 테러집단의 활동상이 공연될 정도로 프린지는 더욱 개방성을 띠게 되었고, 이 덕분에 프린지는 보다 많은 공연단체와 관객들을 오게 할 수 있었다.

영어초록

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the world's largest arts festival. Its success has inspired imitation and so the art festivals have proliferated around the world. This article is not only an examination of the structure of the Edinburgh Fringe but also a history of the Fringe. First, I examine the Fringe Society which coordinates rather than coerces by providing needed services to performers and performing groups.
For most theatre professional accustomed to some kind of government or corporate sponsorship and to touring gurantees, the set up of the Fringe appears to be a recipe for disaster. Performers are not given invitations, strange and unconventional theatres are used and companies must not only obtain their funding, but support the Fringe through the payment of fees. Because the Fringe Society receives little government funding, it is forced to be responsive to it's customers and the performers. Those characteristics are the main reason which enables the Fringe to be free from the intervention of the government. Also the Fringe Society is based upon the principle of the democracy of the Society without any partiality towards each of the performing groups. The success is partially thanks to the excellent service given by the Society.
Also I got several reasons of success of the Fringe. First, I indicate the attraction of Edinburgh city itself, The second reason is the very positive role of the performers, spectators, press men and managers for the effective working of the Fringe, The third reason is that the variety of the works performed aids the new performers to enter into the world of performance. Fourth, I indicate the education effect that many student performers had the very valuable opportunity to practice the contents which they had learned at the school and university. Fifth, the organic cooperation among the local government, the Fringe society, the local population is also another reason of the success. Also, I mention the importance of the holding timing of the Fringe, etc.
