헤바즈라 탄트라의 상징체계에 대한 해석학적 접근 (A Hermeneutical Approach to the Symbolical System of the Hevajra Tantra)

초록

본 연구는 불교해석학의 입장에서 인도 후기밀교와 티베트불교에서 극히 높은 평가를 받아온『헤바즈라 탄트라』를 간단히 고찰한다. 불교해석학은 비록 서양의 해석학적 전통들과는 세부적으로 전혀 다르지만, ‘텍스트에 대한 해석’을 주제로 삼는다는 점에서는 대략 같다고 할 수 있다. 그리고 불교의 경우 해석의 대상인 텍스트는 경이나 탄트라 등 성전을 의미한다. 이 해석의 전통은 초기불교와 대승불교에서의 발전을 거쳐 인도 후기밀교에서 가장 고도로 발전했다고 할 수 있다. 예컨대 대승불교에서 성립한 불요의(不了義)와 요의(了義)의 2대 기준은 후기밀교의 불교해석학에 있어서도 그 토대가 되고 있다. 불요의는 잠정적인 의미인 반면, 요의는 궁극적인 의미라고 할 수 있다. 그러나 불요의와 요의의 적용에 있어서 대승불교와 후기밀교의 사이에는 커다란 차이가 있다고 할 수 있다. 대승불교에 있어서 요의는 축어적인 반면, 불요의는 액면 그대로가 아니라 그 숨어 있는 참된 의미를 찾아야 한다. 이와는 반대로 후기밀교에 있어서는 미요의가 축어적인 반면, 요의는 상징적인 것으로 그 숨어 있는 참된 의미를 찾아야 한다. 또 하나의 중요한 차이점은 의미의 일면성에 대한 이중성에 있다고 할 수 있다. 대승불교에 있어서는 어떤 문장이 불요의와 요의의 양쪽을 의미하는 경우는 거의 없지만, 후기밀교에 있어서는 불요의와 요의의 양쪽을 의미하는 경우가 많다고 할 수 있다. 불교해석학은 불요의와 요의를 중심으로 인도 후기밀교에 와서 꽃을 피우고, 창의적인 주석의 토대가 되었다고 할 수 있다.『헤바즈라 탄트라』는 후기밀교의 많은 요기니 탄트라들 중에서도 가장 유명한 성전들 중의 하나이다. 일견 악마적인 표현들로 가득 찬 그 참된 의미는 오로지 권위 있는 주석서들을 통해서만이 접근할 수 있다고 할 수 있다. 그리고 이 주석서들이 불요의와 요의 등 불교해석학을 토대로 하고 있는 점은 두말할 나위도 없다. 그러나『헤바즈라 탄트라』에는 불요의와 요의 대신에 후기밀교의 2대 수행법인 ‘생성의 단계’와 ‘완성의 단계’가 그 해석의 기준으로 사용되고 있다. 즉 ‘생성의 단계’를 설한 진술은 불요의에 속하지만 ‘완성의 단계’를 설한 진술은 요의에 속한다고 할 수 있다. 그러나『헤바즈라 탄트라』에는 요의가 반드시 축어적이 아니라는 일반론에 대한 반증도 존재하고 있다. 또한『헤바즈라 탄트라』는 소위 ‘탄트라 코드(sandhyābhāṣā)’로 유명한 성전이다. 그러나 학계에서는 오래 동안 탄트라 코드 혹은 ‘비밀스런 언어’와 ‘의도적인 언어(sandhābhāṣā)’ 중 어느 쪽이 올바른 어휘인가에 대한 논쟁이 있어왔다. 본 저자는 두 가지의 예를 들어 탄트라 코드가 올바른 어휘로 추측하고 있다.

영어초록

This study briefly explores the Hevajra Tantra which has been highly evaluated in Indo-Tibetan Buddhism. Although Buddhist Hermeneutics is quite different from Western Hermeneutics in many respects, both are similar to each other in terms of interpretations of texts. In the case of Buddhist Hermeneutics, texts as the objects of interpretation amount to scriptures such as Sūtras and Tantras. It was culminated in later Indian Esoteric Buddhism after a long period of its developments in Theravāda and Mahāyāna Buddhism. For example, the "provisional meaning" (neyārtha) and the "definite meaning" (nītārtha), which were developed in Mahāyāna Buddhism, became the basis of Buddhist Hermeneutics in later Indian Esoteric Buddhism. There are, however, significant differences between Mahāyāna Buddhism and later Indian Esoteric Buddhism concerning the provisional and definite meanings. In Mahāyāna Buddhism, while the definite meaning should be taken literally, the provisional meaning should be interpreted for finding out the true hidden meaning. In later Indian Esoteric Buddhism, however, while the provisional meaning should be taken at face value, the definite meaning is symbolical and should be interpreted for also finding out the true hidden meaning. Another difference lies in the shades of meaning, that is, a single meaning versus a double meaning. In Mahāyāna Buddhism there are few pronouncements that have both the provisional and definite meanings, but in later Indian Esoteric Buddhism, many pronouncements have both meanings. Buddhist Hermeneutics had its heydays in later Indian Esoteric Buddhism and became the basis of creative commentaries.
The Hevajra Tantra, along with the Laghusaṃvara Tantra, is one of the most celebrated yoginītantras. Its true meanings, however, can be approached only through authoritative commentaries because of its many demonic expressions. Needless to say, these commentaries are base on Buddhist Hermeneutics. In the Hevajra Tantra itself, however, instead of the provisional and definite meanings, the "generation stage" (utpattikrama) and the "completion stage" (utpannakrama), which are the two most important practices in later Indian Esoteric Buddhism, seem to be the basic double standards of interpretation. Thus, pronouncegments which explain the process or realm of the generation stage should belong to the provisional meaning. On the contrary, pronouncements which explain the process or realm of the completion stage should belong to the definite meaning. In the Hevajra Tantra, however, there are disproofs against the general theory that informs us of the definite meaning as necessarily being non-literal. Also, the Hevajra Tantra is famous for the "Tantric coded language" (sandhyābhāṣā). However, scholars have debated as to either the Tantric coded language or the "intentional language" (sandhābhāṣā) is the originally correct form. We suppose that the former is correct by putting forward a couple of evidence.
