마스터즈 수영 동호인의 운동지속과 동호회 운영 특성 (The Characteristics of Activity Continuance and Club Operation in Masters' Swimming Club)

초록

본 연구는 마스터즈 수영 동호회가 어떻게 운동지속과 운영되는지를 살펴보고, 그 독특한 운영상의 특성이 어떻게 나타나는지를 분석하는데 목적이 있다. 본 연구의 참여자는 마스터즈 수영 동호회 경력이 3년 이상인 회원과 총무, 회장 등 9명이다. 2010년 12월1일부터 2011년 4월30일까지의 참여관찰과 심층면담을 실시하였다. 이를 통해 다음과 같은 결론을 얻을 수 있었다. 마스터즈 수영 동호인이 동호회에 참가하여 활동을 지속하게 만드는 동호회 운영 특성에는 크게 두 가지― ‘개인적 요인’, ‘상호작용 요인’ 가 도출되었다. 첫 번째 ‘개인적 요인’과 관련해서는 전문 기술 습득과 성취를 위한 과정과 결과, 가족의 유대강화의 세 가지 하위특성이 나타났다. 전문기술의 습득을 위해 자부심을 갖고 개인적 노력을 하는 것에 재미와 몰입을 가져온다. 이것은 자신의 한계 극복과 대회를 위한 끊임없는 노력, 자신의 존재를 과시하기 위한 몸만들기까지 성취를 위한 과정과 결과가 지속요인으로 작용하고 있었다. 마지막으로 동호회 활동이 가족의 유대를 강화시켜 가족 간의 의사소통과 결속력을 높이고, 궁극적으로는 동호인들이 활동을 지속하는 특성으로 작동하고 있음을 이해할 수 있엇다. 둘째 ‘상호작용 요인’에서는 소속감과 동호인간의 정보교류, 인적 네트워크와 그들만의 문화 만들기의 세 가지 하위특성이 나타났다. ‘소속감’에서는 임원진들의 봉사와 자발적인 홍보를 통해 상호작용이 이루어졌고 동호인 간의 정보교류는 동료들 간에 이루어지는 활발한 교수활동과 마스터즈 수영동호회와 관련한 카페를 운영함으로써 지속되었고, 이것이 회원 간의 유대관계로 나타났다. 더불어, ‘인적 네트워크와 그들만의 문화 만들기‘ 가 나타났는데, 이는 개인적인 네트워크 만들기와 수영을 통한 사회자본의 형성 방식으로서의 뒤풀이 문화를 의미한다. 특히 뒤풀이 문화가 의미를 갖는 것은, 수영기술을 학습하고 논의하는 ‘토론 뒤풀이’, 운동 후 배고픔을 해소하는 차원에서 이루어지는 ‘다과 뒤풀이’, 그리고 알몸으로 동일한 공간에서 동질감을 형성시키는 ‘사우나 뒤풀이’ 등이 회원의 활동 지속과 동호회 운영에 직간접적으로 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다.

영어초록

This study aims to examine how masters swimming clubs keep growing as a leisure club despite the fact that it requires more difficult swimming skills and higher level of training, and to analyze what are its management characteristics. The participants of this study are 9 persons including the chairman, the head of general affairs and members of a masters swimming club whose career as a member of this club is longer than three years. Participation observation and intensive interviews were given to them from December 1st, 2010 to April 30th, 2011. The results are as follows: There are two main reasons that people join a masters swimming club and keep participating in its activities: a personal factor and an interactive factor. The sub-characteristics of the first personal factor are acquirement of professional skills, processes and results for a sense of achievement, and connection with other family members. While they train to acquire professional skills, and become proud of themselves, they feel fun and get more into swimming, which eventually helps to overcome their limitation and lead to consistent dialogue. And the sense of achievement through making their body fit is also the factor that they keep participating in this club. Another factor that makes the club members keep participating in this club is that this club activity strengthens the connection between family members, improve their dialogue and increase a family bond. The sub-characteristics of the second interactive factor are increasing a sense of belonging, sharing information between members, and creating human networking and their own culture. The sense of belonging is created by interactive action during volunteering activities and promotion of members. To share information between members, they teach each other and operate an internet cafe. These kinds of activities increase the sense of connection among members. In addition, ‘creating a human network and their own culture means that members create their individual networking and form socialcapital through an after-party culture in South Korea. In particular, there are special after-party cultures: "discussion party" where members discuss their swimming skills, "food and drink party" where they share food after tiring exercise and "sauna party" where they built a connection by sharing a intimate same space. These activities affect the member's consistent participation in the club both directly and indirectly.
