    초록

    The title Dombey and Son has two meanings, both the patriarchy home and family business. This novel focuses on the connection between modern economy and sexual economy. This novel portrays the transition from the age of chariot to the age of railway in the 1840s’ railway building boom. If the transitional age of spirit can be expressed by the transportation, it also appears through the national economy policies from the monopolistic mercantilism to the free trade system. The conflicts and catastrophe are caused by the coercive situation where the law of command and control and profit-orientated mind in business world are directly adapted to the law of family management. This paper explores first Dombey’s modern economic character and then the relation of modern economy and sexuality. The last chapter examines the novel’s dual direction of desires in which the one desire is to reveal the sexuality and the other desire is to bury the sexuality and examines how these contradictory movements bring up the ending’s dramatic turning.
    The connection between modern economy and sexuality economy is evident in Dombey who recognizes the personal and emotional marital relation only through the econmic level. To him Edith Dombey is a bought woman. Edith’s self-disgust turns into a loathing for Dombey and she becomes attached to Florence. Her focus upon Florence is an interesting combination of physically intense female-female erotics and passionate fetishization of Florence’s innocence. This novel shows also sexual deviation through Carker’s homosexual nuance. This book has the two contradictory narrative directions where the early movement is to reveal and posit the sexual desire in a foreground and the later movement is to get rid of the dangerous sex and bury the sexual desire. As Edith cannot disrupt the coherency of the narrative’s representations of power, the narrative direction is the recovery of normalcy, that is the recovery of male power on every front of public and private life.
