韓․中 麻姑 敍事의 스토리텔링 전략 (The Storytelling Strategy of the Korean-Chinese Mago Narrative)

초록

본고는 한․중 마고 서사의 문화콘텐츠 스토리텔링 방향을 제시하여 마고를 현대에 되살리는 방안을 모색해 본 것이다. 먼저 한․중 마고 서사의 문화콘텐츠 성공 가능성에 대해 살펴보았다. 첫째, 마고는 고전 서사에서 드물게 여성 주인공인 서사이다. 창조신과 수호신의 성격도 갖추고 있는 마고는 오늘날에 진취적인 성격을 지닌 여성으로 형상화하기에 적당하다. 둘째, 마고는 한․중․일 동아시아 보편의 서사이기에 커다란 확장성을 지니고 있다. 셋째, 마고 서사는 전 세계에서 시급한 문제로 대두되고 있는 生態 정신의 가치를 환기한다. 넷째, 마고는 젊은 여인과 할머니라는 양가 이미지를 동시에 지니고 있어서 매력적인 캐릭터를 창출할 수 있다. 다음으로는 한․중 마고의 연관성과 특성을 살펴보았다. 중국의 마고 선녀와 한국의 마고할미는 완전히 별개가 아니었다. 중국의 마고가 한국으로 수용된 이후 마고할미로도 불리게 되었으며 한국의 거인 할머니 설화와 결합함으로써 힘이 센 거인인 마고할미가 탄생했다.
이를 바탕으로 마고의 명칭과 외형, 활동 공간, 인간과의 관계 등 마고의 특성을 정리하였다. 중국의 마고 선녀와 한국의 마고할미는 외형이나 활동 공간에서 차이를 보였지만 인간과 떨어져서 살아간다는 점에서는 공통점을 지녔다. 마고의 특성을 토대로 마고의 어떤 요소를 스토리텔링으로 구현할지를 살펴보았다. 먼저 캐릭터 측면에서는 부드럽고 지혜로운 젊은 마고, 힘세고 다재다능한 할머니 마고 이미지는 기존의 전형적인 캐릭터에서 벗어난 새롭고 창조적인 캐릭터가 될 수 있다. 다음은 마고의 능력을 살펴보았다. 마고는 고전의 다른 인물들에 비해 다양하고도 비범한 능력을 소유하고 있으며 남성과 비교해 보아도 뛰어난 능력을 갖추고 있었다. 세 번째로 마고 서사의 갈등 구조를 세 가지 측면에서 생각해 보았다. 韓․中․日 공통의 서사인 마고 이야기를 선점하여 문화콘텐츠 스토리텔링으로 구현한다면 우리 신화와 문화의 매력을 세계에 알리는 소중한 기회가 될 것이다.
마고 서사는 인류의 삶과 문명의 길을 제시하는 대안적 신화가 될 수 있다. 지구의 온갖 자연물을 창조한 자애로운 마고의 정신을 회복하여 자연과 인간의 공존을 모색해 가야 한다. 나아가 힘 있고 능력 있는 마고할미를 통해 할머니의 이미지를 새롭게 제고하고 남녀가 동등하게 공존하는 사회를 고민해가야 하리라 본다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to explore the direction of cultural storytelling for the Korean-Chinese Mago narrative in order to revitalize Mago in the modern age. First, the potential for success of the Korean-Chinese Mago narrative as a cultural content was examined. Firstly, Mago is a rare female protagonist in classical narratives. With the characteristics of a creator and a guardian deity, Mago is suitable for embodying progressive women in the present day. Secondly, Mago is a universal narrative in Korean, Chinese, and Japanese East Asia, giving it significant expandability. Thirdly, the Mago narrative revitalizes the value of ecological spirit, which is an urgent issue worldwide. Fourthly, Mago can create attractive characters by embodying both young women and grandmothers. Next, the relevance and characteristics of the Korean-Chinese Mago were explored. The Chinese Mago and the Korean Mago grandmother were not entirely separate. After the Chinese Mago was accepted in Korea, she became known as Mago grandmother and, in combination with the Korean giant grandmother folktale, the strong giant Mago grandmother was born.
Based on this, the characteristics of the mermaid, such as the name, appearance, activity space, and relationship with humans, were summarized. Although the Chinese Mago and the Korean Mago grandmother differed in appearance and activity space, they shared the common aspect of living apart from humans. Based on the characteristics of Mago, the elements of Mago to be implemented in storytelling were examined. First, in terms of characters, the gentle and wise young Mago and the powerful and versatile grandmother Mago images can become new and creative characters that deviate from the existing typical characters. Next, the abilities of Mago were examined. Compared to other characters in classical literature, Mago possessed various and extraordinary abilities, even surpassing men. Thirdly, the conflict structure of the Mago narrative was considered from three perspectives. If the Mago story, which is a common narrative among Korea, China, and Japan, is implemented through cultural storytelling, it will be a valuable opportunity to introduce the attractiveness of our mythology and culture worldwide.
The Mago narrative can be an alternative mythology that presents the path of human life and civilization. We need to revive the benevolent spirit of Mago, who created all kinds of natural phenomena on Earth, and strive to find a balance between nature and humanity. Furthermore, through the powerful and capable Mago grandmother, we can redefine the image of grandmothers and contemplate a society where men and women coexist equally.
