초록

본 논문은 양산 지역 불교문화 중에서 ‘천성산 불교문화’가 형성되는 과정을 탐색한 것이다. 탐색의 초점은 두 가지이다. 첫째는 천성산 지역에 원효의 척반구중 설화가 정착하게 된 배경에 대해서이다. 둘째는 척반구중 설화가 천성산 지역에 정착하는 과정과 시기에 대해서이다. 그리고 이 두 가지 주제에 대한 탐색을 통해 천성산 척반구중 설화가 양산의 지역문화에서 가지는 의미를 재구성해보고자 하였다.
원효의 척반구중 설화의 원형이 처음 보이는 것은 「고선사 서당화상비」이며, 이때 배경이 되는 공간은 고선사이다. 당나라 성선사(聖善寺)의 화재가 났을 때, 물을 부어서 대중을 구했다는 기록이다. 이 원형의 설화는 고려중기까지 기장 불광사 척판암의 척반구중 설화로 이식된 것으로 추정된다. 천성산 지역 척반구중 설화에는 원효가 구한 당나라의 사찰로 종남산(終南山) 운제사(雲際寺), 당(唐) 태화사(太和寺), 산동성 법운사, 오대산의 큰 절이 등장한다. 원형에 보이는 성선사가 자장이 당나라에 유학했을 당시의 행적을 의식한 사찰명으로 바뀌어 있음이 확인된다. 또한 이때 구한 대중이 신라로 와서 원효의 제자가 되어 천 명의 성인이 되었다는 설화가 부연된다. 그 결과로 포천산(布川山)이라는 산 이름도 천성산(千聖山)으로 바뀌게 된다. 이후 조선시대에는 천성산 척반구중 설화를 기반으로 타 지역까지 설화의 공간이 확장되는 양상이 나타난다.
이 설화는 자장과 통도사를 중심으로 하는 양산 지역의 지배적 불교문화에 대응하여 나타난 것으로 보인다. 그리고 오히려 자장과 통도사 중심의 불교문화에 대응하여 원효와 천성산을 내세운다. 이 과정에서 대결의식에서 오는 긴장감과 탄력감이 천성산 척반구중 설화의 생명력을 강화했던 것으로 파악된다.

영어초록

This paper explores the formation of the 'Buddhist Culture at Cheonseongsan Mountain' in the Buddhist culture of Yangsan. The focus of the exploration is twofold. The first is on the background for the settlement of the narrative of Wonhyo's Throwing a Plate to Save People in the Cheonseongsan area. The second is on the process and period of the settlement of the narrative in the Cheonseongsan area. Through the exploration of these two topics, this article purports to trace the significance of the narrative in the local culture of Yangsan.
The prototype of Wonhyo's story is found for the first time in the inscription of the tombstone of Seodanghwasangbi at the Goseonsa Temple. The place of the story is the Goseonsa Temple. The story is a record of a Shengshansi Temple as a Tang Dynasty temple that caught fire, whose people are saved by Wonhyo’s pouring water. It is believed that this original story was transplanted to the narrative of Wonhyo’s throwing a plate to save people at the Cheokpanam Hermitage of the Bulgwangsa Temple in Gijang by the middle of Goryeo Dynasty. The Tang Dynasty temple mentioned in the tales transmitted in the Cheonseongsan area is recorded diversely as the Yunjisi Temple in the Zhongnanshan Mountain, as the Taihesi Temple in Tang Dynasty, as the Fayunsi Temple in Shandong Province, or as a large temple in Wutaishan Mountain. It can be said that the original name of the Shengshansi Temple was changed purportedly to the name of the temple where the Venerable Jajang stayed during his study in the Tang Empire. It is also said that the people saved at the time came to Silla and became a thousand saints as the disciples of Wonhyo. As a result, the previous name of the Pocheonsan Mountain was also changed to Cheonseongsan (千聖山) Mountain. Later, in the Joseon Dynasty, the place of the story was also expanded to other regions.
This story seems to have emerged in response to the dominant Buddhist culture in the Yangsan region, which centered on the Venerable Jajang and the Tongdosa Temple. rather promoting Wonhyo and the Cheonseongsan Mountain. In this process, the tension and resilience during the confrontation may have strengthened the vitality of the narrative based at Cheonseongsan Mountain.
