초록

본 연구는 전통 민속놀이의 하나인 줄다리기의 성격의 지속과 변화 과정을 통시적인 관점에서 정리하고, 특히 근대시기에 줄다리기의 성격이 어떠한 변화가 있었는지를 중점적으로 살펴보고자 하는 데 목적이 있다.
줄다리기의 기원에 대해서는 많은 논의가 필요하지만, 본래 주술성을 지닌 줄다리기가 점차 시간이 흐르는 과정에서 오늘날 볼 수 있는 다양한 성격으로 변화되어 간 것으로 정리할 수 있을 것이다. 이러한 성격을 지닌 줄다리가 언제부터 우리나라에서 시작되었는지 알 수 없으나, 조선 후기인 18-19세기에 주술성이 강했던 줄다리기는 대동단결성이 보다 두드러진다. 이것은 당시의 시대상과도 일정 부분 관련이 있는데, 향촌 사회를 지배하던 官의 개입으로 이러한 성격의 줄다리기가 이 시기에 빈번하게 행해졌다.
근대시기의 줄다리기는 크게 두 가지 양상으로 살펴볼 수 있다. 하나는 근대시 이전부터 볼 수 있었던 줄다리기가 지속되었는지의 여부이고, 다른 하나는 근대 시기에 오면서 새롭게 생겨난 줄다리기가 그것이다. 전자와 관련 있는 줄다리기는 주술성과 대동단결성을 것이다. 다만 주술성을 지닌 줄다리기는 비록 약화되기는 했으나 일제강점기까지도 지속되고 있음을 알 수 있으며, 대동단결성을 목적으로 하는 줄다리기는 이전에 비해 보다 빈번하게 행해졌던 것으로 보인다.
반면 근대시기에 새롭게 볼 수 있었던 내용 중에 하나는 전통 민속놀이의 하나였던 줄다리기가 학교에서 행해졌다는 점이다. 근대 학교 교육의 등장과 스포츠의 도입 등으로 학생들의 신체 단련, 학생 상호간 단합 등을 목적으로 줄다리가 학교에서도 줄다리기를 했던 것이다. 그리고 근대시기에 생겨난 이러한 성격의 줄다리기는 오늘날까지 지속되고 있는데, 초등학교 운동회와 70-80년대 대학교 축제 기간에 줄다리기 시합을 했던 것이 대표적인 사례다.
결국 전승 과정을 볼 때 근대시기에는 줄다리기가 많은 변화가 있었던 것으로 볼 수 있다. 비록 본연의 주술성은 예전에 비해 약화되기는 하였으나 근대시기까지 줄다리기가 지속되었고, 근대 학교교육의 등장으로 인해 줄다리기가 새로운 형태로 양상으로 변화하기도 하였다. 특히 근대시기 학교에서 행해졌던 줄다리기가 오늘날까지 이어져 오고 있다는 점에서 보면 이 시기는 줄다리기 전승 과정에서 볼 때 매우 중요한 시기였음을 알 수 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of this research is to review the continuance and course of change of characteristics of the tug-of-war which is one of the traditional folk games diachronically, particularly focused on the changes during the period between the times of enlightenment to the Japanese ruling.
Although many discussions are required in terms of the origin of the tug-of-war, it can be summarized as the tug-of-war which had the incantation aspect originally has changed to the diverse characteristics seen today in the course of the time. It is not known when the tug-of-war began in Korea. However, the tug-of-war which was strongly linked to the incantation in the latter part of Joseon era during 18th to 19th centuries presented the unity of Korea more apparently. It is partly related to the period. By the intervention of the government which ruled the country village society, the tug-of-war of such characteristics was frequently held during the period.
The tug-of-war of the time of enlightenment and the Japanese ruling era can be reviewed in two aspects. First is whether or not the tug-of-war seen before the time of enlightenment continued and the other one is the newly-created tug-of-war during this period. The tug-of-war related to the former probably was the incantation and unity of Korea. Yet, the tug-of-war accompanied by the incantation had continued until the Japanese ruling era although it was weakened. The tug-of-war for the unity of Korea was held more frequently.
The new aspects after the time of enlightenment included the tug-of-war which was one of the traditional folk games being held in schools. With the introduction of modern school education and sports, in order to train the students’ bodies and to seek unity of students, the tug-of-war was also played in schools. And this kind of tug-of-war which was introduced after the time of enlightenment is still continuing today. The representative example would involve having the tug-of-war games in the elementary school field days and university festivals during the 70s and 80s.
Ultimately, considering the process of handing down the tug-of-war, the period from the time of enlightenment to the Japanese ruling era was a period with many changes. Although its original incantation aspect weakened compared to the past, it continued until the period. And with the introduction of modern schools, the tug-of-war transformed into a new form. In addition, considering that the tug-of-war held in schools is continuing until today, the period was a very important time in the course of hand-down of the tug-of-war.
