초록

죽방울돌리기는 중국의 도우쿵주(抖空竹) 연희와 유사한 놀이이다. 1900대 전후로 전문 연희패와 보부상들에 의해 연행됐다. 2004년 진주 솟대쟁이보존회가 복원작업을 시작했다. 다년간 노력으로 초보적인 단계를 벗어나 연희자의 개성을 중시하는 놀이로 거듭났다. 죽방울돌리기는 주요 무대가 시작되기 전에 단막으로 등장해 관객의 호기심과 흥취를 한껏 올리는 놀이다. 오랜 단절과 척박한 환경에도 불구하고 전통 목재 모형을 제대로 복원했고, 익살스런 재담은 관객과의 소통을 중시하는 전통연희의 특성과 가치를 잘 보여주었다. 반면 중국의 쿵주는 1990년대 전후로 서서히 회복되다가 2006년 무형문화유산으로 등록되면서 광폭의 성장을 이어갔다. 정부의 적극적 재정지원은 베이징(北京) 올림픽을 위한 대규모 쿵주 대회를 개최하면서 연희자의 급증으로 이어졌다. 전승자 외에도 민간과 국가 서커스단은 각기 다른 연희자의 변용을 수용하면서 대중적 보급에도 성공했다. 때문에 유사한 전통놀이가 각기 다른 토양과 문화 환경에서 대중적인 문화공간으로 확대 재생산 되고 있다는 것은 연희자의 다양성과 무대 공간의 다변화를 촉구하는 좋은 사례이다.
본고는 죽방울돌리기가 쿵주와 차별된 한국적인 특징을 어떻게 고수하며 대중적인 문화공간으로 확대 발전하고 복원되었는지 주시한다. 첫째, 죽방울돌리기의 역사적 전개 과정을 자료와 현지조사 인터뷰 등을 활용해 분석한다. 둘째, 전문 민간 연희단체인 솟대쟁이와 보부상놀이에서의 죽방울돌리기의 복원과 변화과정을 살핀다. 셋째, 연희자, 기법, 제작, 재담 연희 공간 등을 통해서 죽방울돌리기의 연희 양상을 논의한다. 넷째, 놀이의 지속적인 발전 가능성과 보부상촌 설립 후의 과제에 대해서 전망한다. 2018년 보부상촌이 완공되면 상설무대가 마련된다. 무형문화유산의 가치로서 전통적인 원형을 유지하는 동시에 대중적 놀이로서 접근성의 극대화는 오랜 숙원이고 과제이다. 그러기 위해서는 반짝하고 사라지는 관치축제의 답습을 경계해야 국제적인 무대로서 성장할 수 있다. 전국의 다양한 연희단체, 해외 단체와의 공조와 협업으로 창의적인 무대를 열어가야 한다. 보부상촌 설립을 계기로 산재한 죽방울돌리기가 보다 응축된 놀이로 성장함은 물론 쉽고 재미있는 여가 오락 놀이로 거듭나기를 기대한다.

영어초록

Jukbangul spinning is similar to the Chinee play of kōngzhú (空竹). It was carried out around the 18th century by professional performing art groups or traveling merchants. In 2004, the Jinju Sotdaejaengyi Coservation Association started their restoration project. Thanks to multiple years of efforts, it became reborn as a play that values the unique characteristics of the performer and player. Jukbangul spinning was a game that piqued people’s curiosity and excitement before a major stage play was performed, and it usually consisted of a single act. Despite the long break in history and harsh conditions in the environment, the traditional wooden sample has been restored. The witty jokes show well the characteristics and value of traditional performances and games where communication with the audience was important. Meanwhile, the Chinese kōngzhú was gradually restored around the 90’s and was finally registered as an intangible cultural asset in 2006. Since then, it has seen progress in leaps and bounds. The massive subsidies provided by the Chinese government led to large-scale kōngzhú competitions for the Beijing Olympics and a rapid increase in performers. In addition to the traditional artisans, both public and private circus groups adopted variations in their style and contributed to the mass appeal of the performing art genre. This makes it a good example of how traditional play and game can be expanded, built upon and reproduced through the popular cultural space in different cultural and geographical environments.
This paper will examine how Jukbangul spinning sticks to distinctive Korean characteristics which are differentiated from kōngzhú and developed into popular cultural space and restored. First, historical development process of Jukbangul spinning will be analyzed using data and field survey interviews. Third, performance aspects of Jukbangul spinning will be discussed through performers, techniques, production and joke play space and etc. Fourth, the possibility of continuous development of the play and the issues after the foundation of peddler village will be expected.
Once the Bobu Sangchon is completed in 2018, a permanent stage will be established for the art. Preserving the original prototype as an intangible cultural asset and promoting it as a popular play is a long held hope and task that needs to be achieved. Only when the government-led events that make such cultural assets a one-off occasion are averted can the art grow onto the international stage. Creative stage performance opportunities must be sought through collaboration with overseas performing groups as well as performing groups across Korea. This researcher hopes that Jukbangul spinning which has thus far grown in a scattered manner will become more concentrated and consistent to serve as a fun, interesting and easy to learn game for the masses.
