초록

죽촌 권사학의 학문은 전통적인 향촌 지식인의 온건한 기풍을 따르고 있다. 그는 소과를 합격한 이후로는 관직에 나아가지 않고 향촌에 머물며 강학과 향촌교화로 일생을 보냈다. 그의 삶을 드러내는 『죽촌집』의 내용을 검토해 보면 그의 삶이 매우 평온한 가운데 시골의 학동들을 가르치며 향촌의 성리학적 질서를 구축하는데 기여했음을 알 수 있다.
그의 학문적 저작으로 평가받는 몇 가지 저작과 논의를 살펴보면 그의 경전 주석서인 『讀書記疑』는 독서차록적 성격으로 유교경전을 읽는 입문적 성격을 지니고 있다. 이전의 경전에 대한 누적된 주석의 검토와 본격적인 학술적 견해라고는 보기 어렵고 본문의 의미를 짚어 추가 설명해 주거나 구두를 조정하고, 또 상당한 수준의 심득을 제시했다. 시골의 유생들을 지도하는데 활용했을 것으로 판단되는 데, 당대 성리학이 향촌의 지식인에게 어느 정도 깊이있게 전파했는지를 가늠할 수 있게 해 준다.
죽촌의 학문적 구조를 보여주는 「四譬說」은 입지에서 마음을 보존하고, 독서하고, 실천하는 데까지 이어지는 완정한 구조를 보여주는데 다만 그 기본적인 내용은 성리학적 관념이 깊게 드리워진 것이다. 마음의 자세를 중심으로 그러한 학문의 방식을 따라야 하는 논리적 근거를 제시하고 있는데 『격몽요결』의 경우처럼 구체적인 서적이나 방법을 제시하기 보다는 다분히 어떠해야한다는 방식과 그 관념의 저변을 다소 문학적으로 제시하는데 그치고 있다.
그의 잡저 가운데 주목할 만한 것은 『二禮輯略』으로 이것은 당시 상대적으로 관심을 덜 받았던 관례와 혼례를 시행자의 입장에서 예의 본질과 실천을 면밀하게 연관시켜 저술한 것이다. 고식적으로 古禮의 조문을 준용하는 것이 아니라 좀 더 적극적으로 시행자의 편의를 고려하여 관례와 혼례를 시행하자는 것인데 그 논조는 당시의 입장에서는 신선한 개혁적인 기풍마저 느껴지는 것이다.
그의 시편에서 느껴지는 전아함과 후학 최익현의 상찬은 성명을 지키며 향촌 지식인으로 온전한 품성을 지닌 모범적인 유학자로 살아간 그의 삶의 여운이 여전히 음미할 만 하다는 것을 일깨워 준다.

영어초록

Academic learning of Jukchon Kwon Sa-hak follows moderate style of traditional intellectual in rural village. After passing Sogwa (the initial national examination), he stayed in the locality without serving a government position to spend his life in teaching and reformation of rural village. When reviewing the contents of 『Jukchon-jip (竹村集)』 that depicts his life well, it indicates that his life was extremely placid in teaching young pupils of rural area while contributing to establish the neo-Confucius order of rural village.
Looking into some of his writings and discourses assessed as his academic works, his annotations of scriptures in 『Dokseogiui(讀書記疑)』 has the introductory features of reading the Confucian Scriptures with the reading record features. It is difficult to consider them as the review of annotations accumulated on the previous scriptures and full-scale academic opinion, but they additionally explain with the implication of main context or adjust the verbal terms as well as presenting certain level of deep understanding. They are assumed to be facilitated in teaching the scholars in the rural area and it provides the barometer of how deeply the Confucianism of the time was dispersed to the intellectual in rural village.
「Sabiseol(四譬說)」 that demonstrates the academic structure of Jukchon displays the stable structure to keep in mind, read and practice from the locality with its basic contents profoundly embracing the Confucius perception. Around the posture of mindset, it presents the logical basis to follow such method of academics, and as for the case of 『Gyeokmongyogyeol(擊蒙要訣)』, it simply presents the method of what it should be and the foundation of such concept in literary ways rather than presenting detailed publication or method.
From his various writings, 『Iryejipryak(二禮輯略)』 deserves certain attention as it has been written in close relativity for intrinsic nature and practice of manner in the position of implementing person for the customary ceremonies and wedding ceremony that did not have relative interests then. It was not applying the condolence calls of conventional ancient ceremonies but it implicates to implement the customary ceremonies and wedding ceremony in consideration of convenience of implementing person in more positive ways that the ton of the argument is felt for certain refreshing reformative style.
Refinement felt in his poetic works and admiration of his junior scholar, Choi Ik-hyun, enlightens that the lingering imagery of his life as the intellectual in rural village who had the exemplary scholar with warm personality would still be savored and appreciated.
