초록

『서정주 시선』이 출간될 무렵은 휴전을 전후하여 역사적 근대성에 대한 전면적인 불신과 극단적인 냉전의식이 구조적으로 자리잡은 때이기도 하다.『서정주 시선』이 가지고 있는 ‘밝은 서정’은 역사적이 되었든 사회적이 되었든, 그리고 무엇보다 한 개인의 실제 체험에 있어서도 너무나 극적인 전회(轉回)를 보여주는 사건이었다. 자신이 이미 펴냈거나 전쟁의 상흔 속에서 써낸 시들 중에서 가장 밝고 건강한 시를 모아서 출판했기 때문이다. 따라서 이 시기의 그의 시는 비현실적인, 실제 체험과는 유리된 것이라는 평가를 받을 만하다.
그에게 있어 시가 다루어야 할 현실은 체험이나 상황의 문제가 아니라 광범위한 소재, 정밀한 묘사 기법까지를 포함하는 확대된 개념이다. 아울러 보편적인 체험이나 인식의 대상으로서만의 현실에 대한 거부와 꿈, 신비, 운명, 회고, 구신(求神)이 포함되는 현실을 의미한다. 또한 정신사와 언어사의 온갖 저속과 또 그 저속일 수 없는 가치들을 통찰할 만한 곳이어야 한다. 그는 그러한 곳을 “가장 史的 수심이 깊은 곳, 靜的의 수준이 유지되는 곳”이라고 정의한다. 바로 『서정주 시선』은 현실의 고통을 감내하며 ‘온갖 저속’을 치러내는 한편으로 ‘저속일 수 없는 가치들’을 탐구하기 위한 ‘날아오르기’의 장이었던 것이다.
미당은 바로 이 시선집의 시편들에서 끊임없이 상승하려고 한다. 그러나 그 상승은 곧 하강으로 이어지지만 하강은 또한 ‘날개에 힘이 생기는’ 날아가기의 상상적 비행을 위한 변증법적 과정을 보여준다. 『서정주 시선』이 보여주는 부드럽고 밝은 서정은, 그것이 현실 인식의 부재에서 나왔다는 평가를 받는다 해도 천상과 지상이 함께 살림을 차릴 수 있는 넉넉한 중간지대를 열었다는 데 의의가 있다. 그러나 천상과 지상의 혼례가 이루어지는 신방(新房)은 서정주의 오랜 날기의 연습의 결과물이며, 범속한 일상에서 천상의 내밀의 빛을 찾기 위한 상승과 하강의 상상력이 만나 대지에의 귀환과 창공에의 비상이라는 두 가지 면이 눈물겨운 친화를 이루는 장소이다.

When 『Suh Jung Joo’s Poetry Collection』was published, the time wasaround an armistice, and the mistrust of historical modernity and anextreme cold war consciousness were structurally established. ‘Thebright delineation of passion,’ which 『Suh Jung Joo’s Poetry Collection』includes, was the event to excessively show dramatic inversion, whateverit was historical or social, and more than that, even at one’s realexperiences. It was because he collected and published the brightest andhealthiest poetries of his poems, which he had already issued or whichhe wrote in the scars of the war. Therefore, it is possible that his poetriesin that time are evaluated unrealistic and isolated.
To him, the reality being handled by poems is an expanded notion,which includes sophisticate descriptions rather than experiences orsituational problems. Furthermore, it signifies the reality includingrejection, dreams, mystery, destiny, retrospect, and prayers against thegeneral experiences or the subjects only for cognizance. Also, it shouldbe the place that sees through all kinds of vulgarity in the intellectualhistory and the language history and its values that could not be thevulgarity. He defines that kind of place is “the deepest point historically,the point where the level of silence is kept.” 『Suh Jung Joo’s Poetry Collection』, it was where undergoes ‘all kinds of vulgarity’ enduring thepain of reality. Meanwhile, it was the place and environment for the ‘flying’to explore ‘the could not be the vulgarity. Midang continuously tries to ascend in the poems of this poetrycollection. The ascension soon continues on descent, but also it showsthe dialectic process for the imaginary flying to take wings that means,‘strengthening a wing up.’ There is the significance that it opened theenough middle zone where the heaven and the earth are able to settledown together although the soft and bright delineation of passion, which『Suh Jung Joo’s Poetry Collection』shows, is evaluated that it came fromthe absence of reality cognition. However, the bridal room, where thewedding of the heaven and the earth occurs, is Suh Jung Joo’s outcomeof the flying practice in a long period of time, and the room is the placethat the two aspects of returns to the earth and flying to the firmamentmake the pathetic friendship after meeting the imagination of theascension and descent, which search for the secret light of the heavenin an unpoetic routine life.
