친일과 전향의 내적 논리 1 -주요한의 경우- (The Internal logic of Pro-Japanese activities and Conversion 1 : the case of Ju Yo-han)

초록

1937년 중일전쟁 이후에 대동아공영권의 ‘전쟁동원론’과 내선일체의 ‘황국신민화론’이라는 두 가지 내용 가운데 하나를 글에 담아내면서 선전(宣傳)한 문학이 친일문학이다. 필자는 이 글에서 주요한의 친일문학을 집중적으로 조명해 보고자 한다. 주요한은 남한에서 친일인사들이 살다 간 삶의 경로를 가장 전형적으로 보여주고 있다는 점에서 대표성을 띠며, 그동안 최초로 한국근대자유시를 창작한 시인으로서 언급되어 온 만큼 우리 문학사에 미치는 영향 또한 크기 때문이다. 특히, 필자는 주요한의 삶과 문학의 변모과정에 대한 내적 논리를 규명하기 위하여 르네 지라르의 ‘삼각형의 욕망구조’ 이론을 적용해 보고자 한다.
해방 이전까지 주요한의 삶은 ‘서구근대문화→민족주의→친일’이라는 이동경로를 보여주는데, 이것은 ‘산문시와 자유시→민요시와 시조→친일시조와 친일시’라는 시세계의 변모과정과 유기적으로 맞물린다. 첫 시기에, 일본으로 유학을 간 주요한은 일본 지식인사회를 매개로 서구문화를 향유하는 이중경로를 거치게 되므로, 그의 욕망구조는 ‘선망형태의 이중의 삼각형구조’를 띠게 된다. 두 번째 시기에, 일본 지식인사회로부터 배제를 경험하게 된 주요한은 반대급부로서 일본에 대한 대결의식을 갖게 되므로, 그의 욕망구조는 ‘대결형태의 삼각형구조’를 띠게 된다. 세 번째 시기에, 주요한은 중일전쟁을 겪으면서 일본의 선전(善戰)에 자극 받아 적극적인 친일의 길로 들어서게 되므로, 그의 욕망구조는 동일시의 단계를 거쳐 대결 단계로 나아가는 ‘자리바꿈형태의 이중의 삼각형구조’를 띠게 된다.
주요한의 ‘친일시’는 식민지지식인과 일본제국 사이의 동일시가 어떤 경로를 통하여 가능하게 되었는지 그 과정을 기록한 텍스트라 할 수 있다. 동일시의 첫 단계에서 주요한은 전쟁주체인 일본을 ‘선’으로 상정하고, 이를 증명하기 위해 폭력을 숨기는 신화적 텍스트의 생산자가 된다. 두 번째 단계에서 주요한은 일본제국에 대해 스스로 굴종의 자세를 취함으로써 잃어버린 자부심을 되찾고자 하는 병리적인 변증법을 시도한다. 세 번째 단계에서 주요한은 아시아의 젊은이들을 ‘희생양’으로 바침으로써 일본제국과의 동일화를 창출하고 세계제패(制覇)라는 새로운 동양신화의 꿈을 향해 나아간다.
친일문학 연구는 문학사적 평가 차원이 아니라 민족문학의 정체성을 바로잡아 나가기 위한 노력의 차원에서 다루어져야 한다. 우리가 식민지적 수난을 제의로 만드는 순간 친일청산의 논리는 또 하나의 신화가 되어 우리를 박해자의 대열에 서게 할 것이다. 나라 잃은 시대에 생존했다는 그 자체가 나라를 지키지 못한, 폭력을 방임한 원죄로부터 자유로울 수 없는 숙명이라면, 우리 모두가 반성의 주체가 되어야 한다. 친일문학 연구는 숨겨진 친일과 전향의 내적 논리를 파헤쳐 드러냄으로써 금기의 문을 열어 제치고 삶과 문학의 진정한 가치를 탐색해 나아가는 길이 되어야 한다.

영어초록

The definition of pro-Japanese literature is that it is a kind that contains either 'the logic of mobilizing young Korean men for war' based on the greater East Asia co-prosperity sphere or 'the theory of making Koreans imperial subjects' based on integration of Japan and Korea after the Sino-Japanese War in 1937. In this paper, I intend to highlight specifically the Pro-Japanese literature by Ju Yo-han. That is because Ju' life is a classic example of the path of pro-Japanese figures in South Korea at that time, and he has great effects on the history of Korean literature to the extent that he has been mentioned as a poet who created Korean modern free verse for the first time. Especially, I attempt to apply the 'Theory of Triangular Desire' by Rene Girard to this paper to establish the internal logic of changing process of Ju's life and literature.
Before the liberation of Korea from Japan, Ju's life displays the course of 'western modern culture → nationalism → pro-Japanese activity', which is organically consistent with the changing process of his poetic world of 'prosaic poetry and free verse → folk-poetry and sijo(時調) → pro-Japanese sijo(時調) and poetry'. In the first period of his life, while studying in Japan, he went through a double course of enjoying western culture through the Japanese intellectual society and as a result the structure of his desire took on 'a dual triangular structure with harboring a feeling of envy'. In the second period, Ju experienced the exclusion from the Japanese intellectual society and in turn had a sense of competition towards Japan. In this period the structure of his desire took on 'a triangular structure with confrontation. In the third, going through the Sino-Japanese War, Ju stepped down in the path of an active sympathizer for Japan and as a result, the structure of his desire took on 'a dual triangular structure with switching positions' proceeding to the confrontation phase by way of identification.
It is safe to say that Ju's 'pro-Japanese poetry is the text which records the process that through what channel Ju Yo-han makes it possible to identify an intellectual under the Japanese colonial rule with the Japanese Empire. On the first stage of identification, he postulated that Japan is 'good' and in order to prove it, he became a producer of mythical text which hides violence. On the second stage, Ju attempted pathological dialectic of trying to win the lost pride back by taking a position of being subservient to Japan. And then, on the third stage, by offering Asia's young people as a scapegoat he achieved identification with the Japanese Empire and advanced towards a new dream for an oriental myth of domination of the world The study of pro-Japanese literature should be dealt with on the level of effort to correct identity of our nationalistic literature, not on the level of evaluation in history of literature. Upon making our national ordeal during the colonial rule some kind of sacrifice ritual, we would be the persecutors ourselves as the logic of liquidating pro-Japanese activities becomes another myth. If the fact itself that we survived the times when we lost our nation is our fate that is not free from original sin that we could not protect our country and did noting against the violence, we all are the ones who must reflect on ourselves. Studying pro-Japanese literature should be a way of unlocking the door that have been prohibited to open and exploring true value of life and literature by discovering the hidden internal logic of pro-Japanese activities and conversion
