제주 정난주 인물 기념관 설립을 위한 방향성 모색 (An Exploration on the direction for founding the Jeong Nanju Memorial Hall in Jeju)

초록

과거 세대의 기억을 현재와 미래 세대에게 전달한다는 점에서 기억하는 것과 기념하는 것은 기념관의 두 축이 되어야 한다. 특히 역사 인물을 기념하고 기억하려는 목적은 역사 인물의 삶을 본받아 현재를 살아가는 우리가 동력으로 삼기 위해서일 뿐만 아니라 미래에도 전달할 의미를 정립하고 가치를 찾아가기 위해서이다. 현재 한국천주교회 제주교구 내 인물 기념관은 두 곳인데 2001년 용수성지 내에 세워진 성 김대건 신부 표착기념관과 2022년에 개관한 제주의 첫 순교자이자 첫 복자인 김기량 순교기념관이다. 제주교구에서 설립하려는 기념관의 역사적 대상 인물은 ‘정명련’이다. 1801년 신유박해 때 백서 사건으로 능지처사당한 황사영의 부인이자 정약용의 조카이다. 그녀는 대역부도죄인의 처라는 이유로 두 살 난 어린 아들과 제주로 유배가 1838년에 죽기까지 제주도에서 유배인으로 살았다. ‘정명련’ 보다 오히려 ‘정난주’라는 이름으로 더 잘 알려져 있으며 현재까지도 다양한 방식으로 기억되고 있다. 종교를 넘어 제주 지역에 선한 영향력을 끼친 인물로 받아들여졌고 다양한 제주의 문화콘텐츠로 지속적으로 재조명되고 있다. 이 논문의 목적은 기념관 설립에 앞서 몇 가지 문제를 제기하는 것이다. 이를 위해 기념관의 명칭으로 사용될 인물의 이명(異名)이 등장하는 과정 및 전승과 역사의 구분이 모호해진 상황(조작과 허위의 역사 편입)을 살펴봄으로써 새롭게 설립되는 기념관에서 역사와 전승을 포용하는 기념관으로서의 가능성과 한국천주교회사는 물론 유배인의 생활사까지도 보여줄 수 있는 기념관의 확장성을 찾아보고자 한다.

영어초록

A memorial hall should be erected with the remembrance and commemoration as its two founding pillars, as it serves to pass on the memories of the past generations to the present and future generations. The purpose of remembering and commemorating a particular historical figure, especially, is carried out with the purpose of instilling virtues and values to pass on to the future generations, as well as of providing inspiration and motivation for those living the present. Jeju Island is currently home to two memorial halls dedicated to historical figures related to the Korean Catholic Church: The Father Kim Tae-gon Arrival Memorial Hall founded within the Yongsu Holy Shrine in 2001, and The Kim Gi-ryang Martyr’s Memorial Hall, founded in 2022 for the first Catholic Jeju islander ever martyred and beatified. The Catholic Diocese of Jeju plans to found a new Memorial Hall for Jeong Meyong-ryeon: Dasan Jeong Yak-yong’s cousin and wife of the famous Hwang Sa-young, executed for high treason by dismemberment for writing the Silk Letter in the Shinyu Persecution (1801). Wife of a high treason felon, she was exiled to Jeju with her 2-year-old son and lived there until she died in 1838. She is better known as ‘Jeong Nanju’ and is remembered in a variety of ways in arts such as literature, opera, lyric songs, popular songs, musicals, etc. She is accepted as a significant figure with a positive influence on the Jeju community beyond her religious affiliation and is constantly under the spotlight for various cultural contents in Jeju. This dissertation aims to pose a few problems prior to the establishment of the Memorial Hall. It will first explore the historical circumstances where the lore-history boundary has been blurred; namely, it examines how she came to be remembered in two different names, one of which should be selected to be used in the name of the Memorial Hall. Thus, the study will be able to explore the possibilities of this new Memorial Hall embracing and commemorating both the history and lore, and of its capacity to extend its role to showcasing the history of the life of exiles as well as the history of the Korean Catholic Church as a whole.
