대장장이 배순에 대한 지역사적 인식과 신격화 (Recognition and Deification of Blacksmith Bae Soon in Local Historical Perspective)

초록

This study has the purpose to evaluate the unique acts of one blacksmith a meager occupation in mid Joseon dynasty in local historical perspective and analyze how he was raised to a position as community deity by the people of the village he lived in through literature examination and local survey.
The deified protagonist was Bae Soon a blacksmith who lived in the village of Baejeom,Soonheung township, Youngju city, Gyeongbuk province. He became a pupil of Yi Hwang Toigye a prominent scholar by then through his fervent zeal for study, which was a rare case for a low man. When the master Toigye and king Seonjo passed away, he mourned for 3 years,and in particular when Toigye passed away, he made an iron statue of Toigye his teacher personally, serving him just the way the teacher was alive. He was highly evaluated by Confucian scholars of Soonheung area by practicing Confucianism as model, and at last was awarded with a citation by the government.
Later on Bae Soon got to be known as a great figure of Soonheung area, and was even deified as community deity by the people of Baejeom village. In other words, Bae Soon was recognized by people of Baejeom village as a great person practicing filial duty and loyalty to nation, and was established as a holy community deity. The deification of him was an expression made to praise and learn his acts, but on the other hand, that eventually served as an opportunity to strengthen the position of the village and establish the identity of the community among the people of Baejeom village who were poor and meager in Soonheung area. That way, Baejeom village became known more and more as a place to praise Bae Soon and practice Confucianism in Soonheung area.
This study, as a case that covers a proposition that a lowly real person can also be deified among locals, is meaningful in that it found a historical case of a new genre.
