장르영화로서의 주선율: 내러티브 체계를 중심으로 (The Main Melody Film of a Genre Movie: Focusing on the Narrative System)

초록

주선율영화는 원래 1987년 공식화된 중국의 독특한 영화 장르로서 사회주의 혁명정신, 애국주의 등 국가 이데올로기 선전과 인민 교화를 목적으로 만들어진 일군의영화들을 가리켰다. 개혁개방 정책이 가속화되면서 중국 사회의 정치, 경제, 문화 조건이 급격히 변화하였고, 주선율영화 또한 이데올로기 중심의 선전영화에서 탈피하며상업적 성공을 추구하게 되었다. 특히 2001년 중국의 WTO 가입 이후 주선율영화는산업화와 시장화의 길로 접어든 영화산업의 흐름에 따라 관객의 선택을 받아야 될 필요성에 직면했고, 소재의 확대, 할리우드 주류 장르의 특성 도입, 스펙터클을 내세운블록버스터와 스타 시스템 도입 등 다양한 시도를 거듭했다. 그러나 내러티브 체계를중심으로 한 장르 관습을 확립하지 못한 주선율영화는 대부분 관객에게 외면을 당했다. 2010년대 중반에 이르러서야 할리우드 영화의 장르 관습을 성공적으로 로컬라이징한 주선율영화들이 등장하기 시작했다. 그 전형 사례로 꼽히는 <특수부대 전랑 2> (2017)는 국영 대형스튜디오의 작품도 아니고 스타 감독과 배우를 내세우지도 않았지만, 한화 1조 원 가량의 흥행수입을 올리며 당시 기준으로 중국 역대 박스오피스 1위를 기록했다. <특수부대 전랑 2>의 대성공 이후 <유랑지구> 시리즈, 애니메이션 <너자> 시리즈 등 특정 내러티브 체계에 따르는 일련의 영화들이 잇달아 출현했다. 주선율영화는 이제 더 이상 단순한 이데올로기 선전영화가 아니라 고유한 관습(convention) 을 확보한 장르영화로 자리 잡게 된 것이다. 영화 장르는 특정 내러티브를 중심으로한 관습 체계와 관련이 있다.
이에 본 논문에서는 내러티브를 중심으로 2010년대 중반 이후 정형을 확립한 중국 주선율영화의 장르 관습에 대한 분석을 시도했다. 2017 년 개봉한 <특수부대 전랑 2>는 상술한 바와 같이 장르영화로서의 주선율의 대표작으로서 그 내러티브는 다음과 같은 특성을 지닌다. 첫째, 인물 형상에 있어 주인공이반영웅에서 영웅으로 극적인 변모를 겪는 내용을 담고 있다. 둘째, 영화 속 주제인 대의가 국가 이데올로기를 전면에 내세우지 않고 개인의 신념 및 욕망과 연계되어 구현되었다. 셋째, 영화 속에서 다루는 공간이 중국 국내에 머무르지 않고, 끊임없이 확장되면서 테마 역시 전 세계와 우주, 상상 속 공간까지 나아간다. 영화에서 장르는 주류영화의 산업적 특징 및 그 구조와 연관되는 정형성을 지니지만, 특정 시공간에서는텍스트 자체 뿐 아니라 그를 둘러싼 콘텍스트와의 상호 작용을 통해 해당 영화가 위치하는 당대 사회의 면모를 분석하는 데도 유용하다. 이미 중국영화에서 지배적인 주류를 형성하고 있는 주선율영화를 국가 이데올로기 선전영화로 국한하여 분석하는 것보다는 오히려 장르영화의 관점에서 접근함으로써 다각적인 분석을 시도하는 것이 세계 최대 시장으로 부상한 중국영화 연구의 새로운 지평을 여는 데 도움이 될 것이다.

Originally formalized in 1987, Main Melody(主線律, Zhuxianlü) Film was a unique Chinese film genre that was made for the purpose of promoting national ideology and enlightening the people, such as socialist revolutionary spirit and patriotism. As the reform and opening-up policy accelerated, political, economic, and cultural conditions in Chinese society changed rapidly, and Ju Sun-yul movies also broke away from ideology-centered propaganda films and pursued commercial success. In particular, since China joined the WTO in 2001, Main Melody films have faced the need to be selected by the audience according to the flow of the film industry, which has entered the path of industrialization and marketization, and have made various attempts, such as expanding the subject matter, introducing the characteristics of Hollywood mainstream genres, and introducing a blockbuster and star system featuring spectacle. However, most of the films that failed to establish genre customs centered on the narrative system were turned away by the audience. It wasn’t until the mid-2010s that the genre customs of Hollywood movies were successfully localized that began to appear. Wolf Warriors Ⅱ (2017), which is considered a typical example, is neither a work of a state-run large studio nor a star director or actor, but it earned about 1 trillion won in box office revenue in China at the time, ranking first in the history of China.
After the great success of Wolf Warriors Ⅱ, a series of films according to a specific narrative system such as The Wandering Earth series and the animation Nezha series appeared one after another. The Main Melody Film is no longer a simple ideological propaganda film, but a genre film that has secured its own convention. The genre of the film is related to a customary system centered on a specific narrative. Therefore, this paper attempted to analyze the genre customs of Chinese Main Melody Films, which have established formalities since the mid-2010s, focusing on the narrative. Wolf Warriors Ⅱ, released in 2017, is a representative film of main characteristics as a genre film, and the narrative has the following characteristics. First, it contains the content of the protagonist going through a dramatic transformation from anti-hero to hero in the character shape. Second, the cause, the theme of the movie, was implemented in connection with individual beliefs and desires without bringing national ideology to the fore.
Third, as the space covered in the film does not remain in China, but continues to expand, the theme also advances to the world, the universe, and the imaginary space. In a movie, the genre has a stereotype related to the industrial characteristics and structure of mainstream films, but in a specific time and space, it is also useful to analyze the aspect of the society in which the film is located through interaction with the context surrounding it as well as the text itself. It can be said that it is a wasteful task to analyze the mainstream films that have already formed the dominant mainstream in Chinese films as national ideological propaganda films. Rather, attempting a multifaceted analysis by approaching it from the perspective of genre films will help open a new horizon for Chinese film research, which has emerged as the world’s largest market.
