    초록

This article examines Jo Injwa’s contribution to Korean traditional music and his educational effort for younger musicians in Gyeongju from the 1930s to 1988, the year of his passing away and finds out his influence on Gyeongju community.
After the Korean war, when traditional culture and music were considered inferior to those of the West, Jo Injwa joined forces to run Dongdogukakwon Institute to preserve and enhance Korean traditional music. In addition, he who liked to compose sijo and sing sijochang organized Dongdosiuhoe Society. His patriotism which had been directed to the independence movement during the Japanese colonial period was succeeded by his dedication to the Korean traditional culture through Dongdogukakwon Institute and Dongdosiuhoe Society. Despite his enthusiasm, however, the institute did not meet his expectation, and he founded Gyeongju Gukakwon Institute.
With the goal of fostering the next generation of musicians in mind, he revolutionized the machinery and operation of the municipal institute and established Gyeongju Gukak Middle School. As a result, those educated in this institution have formed the backbone of the Korean traditional music in various parts of Korea, not to mention in Gyeongju. Yun Yigeun, Gyeong Deokae, Gyeong Deokmyeong, Kim Gyeongae, and Ju Yeonghui are those from the institution to name but a few. Besides, the instructors of those days, such as Jang Woljungseon, Park Deokhwa, and Jeong Sunim, were designated as intangible cultural assets of Gyeongsangbukdo.
Jo Injwa was so eager to preserve the Korean traditional music that he decided to make use of his own money for his cause when appropriate music education could not be expected in public schools from the 1950s to the 1980s. He also made a great influence on the birth of intangible cultural assets of Gyeongsangbukdo. Although it has been almost 30 years since Jo injwa died and it seems a bit overdue, it is still important to redeem what he accomplished to set an example for his descendents.
