정토교의 임종론 고찰 -임종행의(臨終行儀)를 중심으로- (A study on the theory of dying in the Pure Land Buddhism : focused on the Rites of dying)

초록

본 논문은 대승불교의 한 축을 이루는 정토교의 내세정토신앙에 나타난 임종론을 정리하는 한편, 이를 현대적인 입장에서 새로운 각도로 해석한 것이다. 특히 임종행의(臨終行儀)와 관련된 문헌에 기반하여 그 내용을 검토하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 동아시아 정토교의 생사관을 정토삼부경을 중심으로 검토하였다. 첫째는 염리예토(厭離穢土)와 흔구정토(欣求淨土)에 나타난 것처럼 염불 신앙에 의지하여 사후 내세를 염원하는 계기와 그 지향점을 고찰하였다. 둘째는 임종염불과 극락왕생정토와의 관계를 통해 임종업의 중요함을 제시했다. 셋째는 극락정토에서 불퇴전 지위의 확립이 가지는 의미를 살펴보았다. 넷째는 중생구제를 위한 예토에서의 환생인 환상(還相)이야말로 대승불교의 가르침이 계승되는 것으로 정리했다.
이어서 임종행의의 과정에 나타난 임종론을 세 분야로 나누어 분석하였다. 첫째는 임종행의와 임종정념이 가지는 의미, 둘째는 임종자와 임종선지식 관계, 셋째는 내영(來迎)과 정토왕생의 교리적인 고찰을 시도하였다. 그리고 이에 입각하여 정토교 임종론의 현대적 의의를 밝혔다. 먼저 임종정념은 임종자에게 안심과 평화를 부여하여 죽음을 수용하게 하는 것으로 이는 대다수의 임종자가 갖는 죽음의 불안으로부터 벗어나는 길임을 논하였다. 그리고 임종선지식은 임종자의 케어만이 아니라 영혼의 사후에 대한 안내자로서 추선(追善)까지 행하는 종교적 역할자임을 밝혔다. 마지막으로 임종자의 주관적 진실에 의해 일어나는 내영 즉, 임종시의 비전과 영상(映像)은 사후 희망을 부여하는 중요한 기제가 됨을 논하였다.
내세 왕생정토신앙은 생전을 비롯하여 임종에 이르기까지 대승불교의 중생구제의 정신을 착실히 구현함으로서 오늘날에도 여전히 민중 신앙으로써 각광받고 있다. 특히, 임종과 관련된 정토교의 이처럼 풍부한 전통은 죽음을 둘러싼 다양한 논의가 이루어지고 있는 현대사회에서 여러 문제점들을 보완하고 새로운 관점을 제공해 줄 것으로 본다.

영어초록

This paper is written in order to arrange the theory of dying on the Pure Land(Sukhāvatī) belief which is one of the important fields in Mahāyāna Buddhism, and make an new interpretation of that from modern viewpoint. Especially, this writer reviewed on the theory of dying based on various literatures. First of all for that, it is focused on three parts sūtra of the Pure Land.
Firstly, this writer considered the cause to desire next life after death through chanting the Buddha’s name in reliance on the dislike of the mundane sphere and the wishfulness for the Pure Land. Secondly, this writer also did an analysis of importance on karma in dying through relation with chanting the Buddha’s name in dying and going to the Western Paradise(the Elysian fields). Thirdly, it was reviewed on meaning to have the establishment of determined position in the Pure Land of Happiness in the Western. Lastly, it was showed that the coming in the world, in other words, reincarnation in this mundane world to save for all people is to inherit the teaching of Mahāyāna Buddhism.
Following this analysis, the theory of dying was analysed to three parts in the Rites of dying. First, the meaning of the Rites of dying and Right remembrance in dying. Second, the relationship of the dying and Buddhist patron(kalyāṇa-mitra) for dying, Third, doctrinal consideration on the advent of Buddha with Bodhisattvas and the going to the Western Paradise.
And then the theory of dying in modern meaning became clear. First of all, it is important that Right remembrance in dying is to let the dying accept death after putting a person at his(her) ease and peace. This means that many people in dying have the way to escape from the anxiety of death. Buddhist patron for dying is the religious person to take a role not only to care the dying but also to guide after death of him(her) and to do a religious service for the repose of the soul of him(her) too. Lastly, It is declared that the advent of Buddha with Bodhisattvas appeared from subjective truth of the dying, that is, vision and image in dying breath became a significant means to give him(her) hope.
The belief to go to the Western Paradise after death is in the limelight as religious one by many people nowadays for realizing properly the spirit of salvation of Mahāyāna Buddhism not only during one′s lifetime but also in last breath. In particular, various problems in modern society in which it is focusing on death, can be solved and another new perspective can be offered by the tradition of the Pure Land Buddhism related with dying.
