초등 사회 검정 교과서 11종의 6⋅25 전쟁 서술 분석 연구 (A study on the analysis of the description of the Korean War in 11 types of elementary school social studies certified textbooks)

초록

6⋅25전쟁은 대한민국의 존립과 관련된 중대한 사건이지만 최근 초등학교 사회 교과서의 6⋅25전쟁서술이 여러 문제가 지적되고 있다. 본 연구는 바람직한 교과서의 6⋅25전쟁 서술의 방향을 탐구해보고, 이를기준으로 2023학년도 본 초등학교 5학년 사회 검정교과서 출판사 별 11종의 6⋅25전쟁의 서술을 검토하여구체적으로 어떤 점이 문제가 되는지를 밝혀보고자 하였다. 6⋅25 전쟁의 학습 의의로서 국가(체제)정체성(반공과자유민주), 외교 전략, 후대의 책임과 역할을 선정하고, 전쟁의 기원과 전개 과정을 서술할 때 국가(체제)정체성이잘 드러나는지, 정전과정에서 외교적 기제가 잘 드러나는지, 학습자들이 책임과 역할을 가질 수 있도록 전쟁과관련하여 해결해야 할 과제들을 잘 제시하고 있는지를 분석 준거로 마련하였다.
분석 결과, 초등학교 사회 교과서들은 6⋅25전쟁에 대하여 전체적으로 빈약하게 서술하고 있었는데, 이는 중립성의 확보나 학습량의 축소라기보다는 역사적 사건 간의 인과관계를 드러내지 못해 학생들의 이해를 어렵게 만들고있었다. 또한 11종의 검정교과서는 서술 분량과 내용에 대해 차이를 보이고 있었다. 학생들이 국가의 역사에대하여 서로 다르게 배우게 되는 것은 사회의 이념 갈등의 심화와 양극화를 극대화하는 데 일조할 우려가 있다.
본 연구는 초등학교 사회 교과서에서의 6⋅25 전쟁 서술의 문제점을 분석하고, 미래 교과서 개선을 위한 방향성을제시하고자 하였다. 본 연구는 초등학교 5학년 사회 교과에 대해 처음으로 사용된 검정교과서를 구체적으로 다루고자 하였다는 의의를 가지며, 또한 현재 2022 개정 교육과정에 근거한 5-6학년군 교과서가 만들어지고 있는시기라는 점에서 시의성을 갖는다고 할 수 있다. 본 연구의 결과와 논의는 향후 초등 사회 교육과정의 개선과교과서 발행에 도움을 줄 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

The Korean War was a significant event related to the existence of the Republic of Korea, but several problems have recently been pointed out in the description of the Korean War in elementary school social studies textbooks. This study explores the direction of the desirable description of the Korean War in textbooks, and based on this, examines the description of the Korean War in 11 types of textbooks for 5th grade elementary school social studies by publisher for the 2023 school year to determine what specific issues are problematic. Studying of the Korean War, the national (regime) identity (anti-communism and liberal democracy), diplomatic strategy, responsibility and role for future generations are selected. The criteria for analysis were whether the national (regime) identity is clearly revealed when describing the origin and development process of the war, whether diplomatic mechanisms are clearly revealed in the armistice process and whether tasks to be solved related to the war are presented well so that learners could have responsibilities and roles.
As a result, elementary school social studies textbooks described the Korean War poorly overall.
This was not about securing neutrality or reducing the amount of learning, but rather failing to reveal causal relationships between historical events, making it difficult for students to understand.
Additionally, the 11 types of certified textbooks showed differences in the amount of description and content. There is concern that students learning differently about their country's history may contribute to deepening ideological conflict and maximizing polarization in society.
This study attempted to analyze problems with the description of the Korean War in elementary school social studies textbooks and suggest directions for improving future textbooks. This study is significant in that it attempted to specifically deal with the certified textbooks used for the first time in social studies for 5th grade elementary school students, and is also timely in that textbooks for 5th and 6th grade groups based on the 2022 revised curriculum are currently being created. The results and discussions of this study can be used as basic data to help improve elementary school’s social studies curriculum and publish textbooks in the future.
