영혼의 그리스도론적 특성에 대한 종말론적 고찰 (Eschatological Study on the Christological Characteristics of the Soul)

초록

인간은 자기 스스로를 가능하게 할 수 있는 필연적 존재가 아니라, 필연적 존재에게서 기인한 하나의 우연적 존재이기에 자기 존재 이유를 자기 자신에게서 찾을 수 없다. 성경은 인간이 하느님의 창조물이고, ‘하느님의 모상’(Imago Dei)이라고 가르친다(참조: 창세 1,26-27). 하느님의 모상으로서의 인간이 지니는 특별함이 인간 존재의 첫 번째 특성인데, 이 특성은 바로 인간이 다른 모든 피조물과 구분되는 점, 즉 영적이고 정신적인 능력을 소유한다는 점이다. 흙으로 빚어졌기에 인간은 유한하고 제한적인 존재이지만, 하느님의 숨(=영)이 불어 넣어졌기에 인간은 제한적이지만 자기 초월이 가능하다. 또한 인간은 영혼과 육체의 단일체라는 것이 성경의 가르침이고 교회의 가르침이지만, 인간 안에서 육체와 영혼의 기능과 역할이 동일하지는 않다. 전통적으로 가톨릭교회는 ‘영혼이 육체의 형상’이라고 가르친다. 따라서 인간이 영과 육의 온전한 단일체임에도 불구하고, 인간 안에서 영혼은 보다 본질적이고 독자적인 영역이라고 인정된다.
본 논문에서는 영혼의 불멸과 관련된 주제를 다루고자 한다. 영혼이 불멸한 것인지, 만일 그렇다면 어떻게 그것이 가능한 것인지 규명하고자 한다. 특히 삼위일체의 제2위격인 예수 그리스도와의 관계를 통해 이 문제를 다루고자 한다. 본 논문에서는 먼저 영혼 불멸이 불가능하다는 주장, 그리고 영혼 불멸이 가능하다는 주장을 차례대로 알아본다. 이후 만일 인간 영혼의 불멸이 가능하다고 여겨진다면 한 개인의 죽음 이후에 상정되는 중간상태, 그리고 중간상태의 한 형태라고 할 수 있는 연옥에 대해서도 논해보고자 한다. 관련 주제를 이끌어가는 가장 중요한 출발점은 그리스도론이다. 다양한 종말론적 주제들을 그리스도론적 관점으로 전개하고자 하는 것이 본 논문의 주된 관점이다. 그리스도교의 모든 신학과 신앙은 그리스도론이 출발점이고, 핵심이고, 결론이어야 한다는 것이 성경의 가르침이고, 가톨릭교회의 가르침이다. 그러므로 본 논문에서는 영혼 불멸과 이와 관련된 종말론 관련된 주제들을 그리스도론적인 고찰을 통해 전개해 나가고자 한다.

영어초록

Human beings are not absolute beings that can enable themselves, but sort of accidental beings that airse from inevitable beings. Humans cannot find of themselves the reasons for their existence. The Bible teaches that humans are God’s creatures and ‘the image of God’ (Imago Dei) (cf. Gn 1:26-27). The first characteristics of human beings created in the image of God is that they are born with the spiritual and mental abilities which make them distinct and distinguished from the other creatures. Made of clay, humans are finite and limited, but as the breath (=spirit) of God is breathed into them, they can surpass themselves despite their limit. It is the teachings of the Bible as well as the Church that human beings are the union of the soul and the body, but the function and role of body and soul are not the same. Traditionally, the Catholic Church teaches that ‘the soul is the form of the body.’ Therefore, although humans are the whole unity of soul and body, the former is relatively regarded as more essential and unique.
In this paper topics related with the immortality of the soul will be dealt with. It will be examined if the soul is immortal, and if so, how that is possible. Especially, this issue will be approached in terms of the relationship with Jesus Christ, who takes the second hypostasis of the Trinity. In this paper, the claim that immortality of the soul is impossible will be examined along with the opposite assertion that it is possible. Next, if the immortality of the human soul is considered possible, discussed will be the intermediate stage which is assumed to exist after the death of an individual, as well as a purgatory, which can be said to be a form of the intermediate state. The most important starting point that will lead and comprise the related topics is Christology. Therefore, this paper will be focused on developing various topics related with eschatology from the perspective of Christology. It is the teachings of the Bible and the Catholic Church that Christology should be the starting point, main concept and conclusion of all the Christian theology and faith. Hence, topics of the immortality of the soul and eschatological subjects thereof will be examined through christological contemplation.
