초록

이 논문은 톰 후퍼가 연출한 작품에서 역사적 실존 인물들을 어떻게 스토리텔링 했는지 연구하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 감독의 해당 작품들을 이야기 단계별로 정리하고, 각 단계에 나타나는 감독의 이야기 방식이 가지는 특징을 분석했다. 연구 결과, 톰 후퍼의 프롤로그는 자막을 통해 역사적 인물의 시대와 장소(배경)를 소개하고, 이어지는 장면을 통해 직업이나 성격을 알려주는 방식을 취한다. 또한, 주인공의 가족을 등장시켜 역사적 인물에게 관객이 감정이입을 할 수 있게 하거나, 기후를 통해 주인공의 현재를 상징적으로 표현하는 특징이 있었다. 이어서 발단에서는 인물의 삶에 영향을 미치는 첫 사건이 등장해 향후 그가 휘말리게 될 미래의 사건과 역사의 계기를 제시한다. 감독은 이 단계를 통해 앞으로 펼쳐질 역사적 이야기에 대한 호기심, 궁금증, 미래 예측을 유발했다. 감독의 작품에서 도발적 사건은 주인공의 선택이나 행동을 통해 일어나거나, 자신의 태도를 통해 사건으로 인식하는 특징이 있다. 그 선택은 개인이었던 주인공이 역사의 전면에 등장하는 시발점이 된다. 또한, 고통받고 있던 인물에게 삶을 변화시킬 조력자를 등장시키거나 주인공의 삶을 이해할 수 있도록 하는 단계로 기능했다. 톰 후퍼의 전개는 일반적인 단계의 과정과는 다른 형태를 가진다. 원래 이 단계의 후반부는 인물의 목표가 적대자(장애물)와 마주하면서 갈등이 증폭된다. 그런데 감독의 작품에서는 주인공이 역사적 인물이라는 특수성 때문에 역사적 흐름 속에 사건들이 일어나는 형식을 구성하고 있어, 이 단계는 주인공에게 일어났던 단일한 사건이 해결되는 것으로 끝나고, 새로운 갈등은 다음 단계에서 파생된다. 톰 후퍼의 위기 단계는 주인공 행동의 결과로 조성되는 것이 아니라, 인물이 속한 사회의 시대적 변화로 이루어지는 특징이 있다. 그가 해당 시대에 태어났기 때문에, 그의 형제가 다른 선택을 했기 때문에 주인공은 운명의 향방이 바뀐다. 이어지는 절정 단계는 인물이 맞이한 역사적 운명이라는 위기 상황에서, 다시 한번 주인공의 선택으로 불가역의 결정을 하거나, 추구한 목표의 성패를 맞이한다는 특징을 가지며, 주인공은 자신의 역사를 완성하게 된다. 또한, 많은 작품이 절정에서 이야기가 끝나는 방향으로 향하는데, 그의 작품들은 새로운 역사적 이야기의 발화점을 제시한다는 특징이 있다. 톰 후퍼 이야기의 결말은 인물이 흐르는 역사 속에서 선택을 통해 그 중심으로 들어가거나, 추구하는 어떤 것의 성패가 결정된 시기를 보여준다. 이 단계의 특징은 주인공의 삶을 결정하는 하나의 큰 역사가 종결되고, 다시 다음 역사로 이어지는 구성이 이루어지고 있다는 점이다. 역사적 인물들은 이 단계를 통해 다음 역사로 향하거나 잘못된 선택을 수정한다. 끝으로 에필로그의 특징은 인물의 후일담 형식을 취하고 있다는 것에 있다. 실패한 선택을 바로잡아 재기한 주인공, 삶의 변화를 준 인물과의 우정, 새 삶에서 용기를 보인 인물에 대한 설명이 그것이다. 이런 구성은 주인공들이 특정 시기와 국가에 존재했던 인물이므로, 인물에 대한 이해가 부족한 관객의 이해와 궁금증을 해소하기 위한 것이다.

This study aims to examine how Tom Hooper tells the stories of historical real-life figures. For this purpose, this study categorized his films into narrative stages and analyzed the characteristics of his storytelling approach at each stage. The findings reveal that Tom Hooper’s prologues typically in troduce the historical figures’ times and places (backgrounds) through subtitles, followed by scenes that reveal their occupation or personality. Additionally, the introduction of the protagonist’s family members helps the audience empathize with the character, while the climate is often used symboli cally to represent the protagonist’s current state. The beginning phase introduces the first event that significantly affects the character’s life, presenting the momentum for future events and the historical turning points they will encounter. During this stage, the director effectively evokes curiosity, ques tion, and anticipation for the unfolding story. The inciting incident in his films is characterized by the fact that it arises from the protagonist’s choices or actions, or by the protagonist perceiving it as an event through their attitude, marking the moment when the protagonist, initially an individual, steps into the historical spotlight. This phase also introduces an ally who brings a transformative change to the suffering protagonist or allows an understanding of the protagonist’s life. Tom Hooper’s development stage diverges from the conventional narrative structure. Typically, the latter part of this stage sees an escalation of conflict as the character’s goals clash with an antagonist or obstacle. However, in Hooper’s works, the historical nature of the protagonist necessitates that events unfold within a broader historical context. As a result, this stage concludes with the resolution of a single event that occurred to the protagonist, with new conflicts emerging in the subsequent stage.
The crisis stage in Hooper’s films is not driven by the protagonists’ actions, but rather by the chang ing times in the society they inhabit. The protagonist’s fate shifts not because of their actions, but due to circumstances such as being born in a particular era or the different choices made by his brothers. The climax phase is marked by the protagonists’ encounters with their historical destiny, where they make an irreversible decision or realize the success or failure of their pursuit, thereby completing their historical narrative. Unlike many other works where the story concludes at the climax, Hooper’s films often introduce the beginning of a new historical narrative. The ending of a Tom Hooper film illustrates the moment in history when a character makes a pivotal choice, either stepping into the center of history or reaching the culmination of their pursuit. This stage is characterized by the conclusion of one significant historical narrative in the protagonist’s life, which thensets the stage for the next chapter. Historical figures use this stage to move forward to the next narrative or correct past mistakes. Lastly, the epilogue in Hooper’s films often takes the form of an af terword, recounting the protagonist’s recovery from a failed choice, their friendship with a transformative figure, or the courage they demonstrate in their new life. This structure helps resolve the audience’s understanding and curiosity about these historical figures, who existed in specific times and countries.
