초록

This article is to examine the problem of good and evil and thematic unity in John Steinbeck's East of Eden(1952). In his work, Steinbeck carefully delineates and defines the nature of good and evil through the lives of his characters, the Hamiltons and the Trasks. Closely allied to the ‘timshel' theme, “Thou mayest rule over sin,” is this corollary and necessary metaphysical exploration that seeks to discover what goodness is and what evil is. This thematic exploration is closely allied to the novel's structure.
Steinbeck describes Kate, who looms almost larger than life in the novel, as the complexity, simplicity, and the image of evil. On the other hand, he describes other women as the image of good. However, I can see the possibility of goodness in Kate in her daydream of what life might be like with her son, Aron.
Therefore, in this article, I argue that the human behaviors arising from evil nature of humans can be changed. The alloy of good and evil, the impossibility of human perfection, has been illustrated in all of our lives. In conclusion, I think that in this way, Steinbeck traced the structural and thematic unity in East of Eden.
