초록

웨슬리는 그리스도인의 윤리적 실존을 이중적 구조로 이해하였다. 그리스도인은 하나님과 관계를 맺고 있는 동시에 세상과 관계를 맺고 있다. 여기서 세상과의 관계는 하나님과의 관계에 의하여 형성되며 유지된다. 따라서 그리스도인의 사회적 삶은 하나님의 선행적 은총에 대한 응답이다웨슬리에게 있어서 성화는 개인적 영성이 아니라 공동체적 영성이다. 그는 사회참여 활동을 통하여 영성과 사회개혁의 종합을 시도하였다. 그에게 하나님 형상의 회복이라는 구원론적 상징은 창조질서의 회복이라는 의미에서 사회적 유비를 가진다. 그의 성화 개념은 죄와 구원에 대한 그의 이해를 전제로 하는데, 죄는 개인적 차원에만 제한되지 않고 사회구조 안에 내재해 있다. 따라서 칭의와 성화는 개인적 차원을 넘어서 사회전체까지 확산되며 성화는 사회변혁적 의미를 가진다.
웨슬리에게 구원의 질서의 각 단계는 점진적 발전과정이 아니라 관계적 사건이다. 성화는 죄인인 인간을 거룩하게 하시는 성령의 활동성이며 그리스도인의 완전은 그리스도인으로 하여금 완전하신 그리스도를 체험하고 그의 온전하심에 참여하게 하는 성령의 역사이다. 구원의 질서를 통하여 인간 안에 나타나는 변화는 하나님 안에 나타나는 변화에 근거한다.
사회적 성화의 궁극적인 목표는 이웃사랑으로 나타나는 실천적 영성이다. 웨슬리는 메토디스트 운동을 통하여 새로운 교파를 만들기보다는 교회를 개혁하고 성서적 성결을 확산시키려고 시도하였다. 인격과 사회구조는 연대성을 가지고 있다. 사회구조의 악은 인간 안에 있는 죄성의 외부적 결과이다. 따라서 사회의 변화는 인격의 변화로부터 시작된다. 개인적 성화와 사회적 성화가 연결된다. 외적 성결은 내적 성화와 연결된다.
웨슬리의 사회윤리의 핵심은 그리스도께서 성령으로 우리 생활 속에 변혁을 일으키시며, 교회를 통하여 성령의 일치를 이루시고, 세상에서는 성령의 열매인 사랑의 복종을 요구하면서 지속적인 변혁을 이루어 가심을 확신하는 것이다. 성령은 하나님의 뜻을 사랑의 행위로 실천하는 능력이며 그리스도인의 윤리적 현실은 성령의 활동영역이다. 성령은 그리스도인들을 공동체로 부르시고 성화시킴으로써 사회변혁을 위한 누룩이 되게 한다. 이러한 의미에서 웨슬리는 성령론을 통하여 영성과 윤리의 균형을 시도한다. 사랑으로 역사하는 믿음은 웨슬리에게 있어서 모든 기독교 사회윤리와 모든 사회활동의 초석이다. 다시 말해서 사랑은 성화의 기본 동기이자 본질적인 내용이고 타인을 향한 책임적 행위 토대가 된다.

영어초록

Wesley Christian understands the christian existence ethical in dual structure. He stands at once in relationship with God and with the world. The relation with the world is formed and to be maintained by the relationship with God. Therefore the social life of the Christian is a response to God's prevenient grace.
For Wesley the Sanctification means communal spirituality rather than personal one. Through community involved activities, he attempted the synthesis of spirituality and social reform. The soteriological symbol which appears in the restoration of the image of God has a social analogy in the sense that the restoration of the created order.
His concept of sanctification assumes presupposes his understanding of sin and salvation and sin is not limited to the individual level but inherent in the social structure. Therefore, justification and sanctification will spread beyond the individual level to the society as a whole and the sanctification has the meaning of social transformation.
Wesley's order of salvation to each step does not construct a gradual process of development, but the relational event. And the sanctification is the activity of the Holy Spirit which makes sinful human existence holy while the christian perfection indicates his work which to participate in His perfection which involves christian into the perfect being of Christ. The changes of human existence appear in the order of salvation is based on the change in God.
The ultimate goal of social sanctification is a practical spirituality that appears to the love of neighbor. Wesley tried to reform the church and spread scriptural holiness through Methodist movement, rather than creating a new denomination. Personality and social structure have solidarity. The evils of social structure is composed of the external consequences of human sinfulness. Then the social change begins with a change of personality. In the same way personal sanctification and social sanctification is connected each other. The external is linked to the inner sanctification and holiness.
The core of Wesley's ethics is to convince that Christ transforms our lives and accomplishes the unity of the Church through Holy Spirit, and that he raised a continuous transformation, requiring the submission of love as the fruit of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the ability to practice the will of God as an act of love, and the Christian ethical reality is an area of his activity. The Christian community is called and sanctified by the Holy Spirit to be a leaven for social transformation. In this sense, Wesley tries to balance spirituality and ethics through pneumatology. The faith that works by love is for Wesley the cornerstone of all Christian social ethics and social activities. In other words, the love is not only the foundation of sanctification but also its primary motivation and furthermore basis of the responsible behavior towards others.
