초록

조선족 발해전설에는 경박호전설, 명당설화, 축성설화, 백성들의 무용담, 그리고 지배집단의 행패와 무능을 비판하는 설화들이 있다. 역사전설로서의 분명한성격을 지닌 작품도 있지만 일부 설화의 경우 역사성이 퇴색되면서 단순한 지명유래담으로 변이된 것도 있다.
경박호전설의 공통적인 내용은 호수 이름과 거울의 유래담이다. 「경박호⑴」은발해 멸망과 애왕의 한을, 「경박호와 모란강」은 지배집단의 행패로 인한 민중의비극적인 삶을 내용으로 한다. 「경박호⑵」는 거울을 매개로 「경박호⑴」과 연계하여 보지 않으면 발해전설로 볼 수 없을 정도로 역사성이 퇴색되어 있다.
발해 명당설화에는 강대국의 가해로 인한 약소국의 민족적 좌절 이야기가 없다. 대신 상경룡천부와 동경룡원부가 발해의 명당에 세워졌기 때문에 발해가 번성했다는 우월의식이 깔려 있다. 국내 명당설화에 공통적으로 전개되는 중국의 단맥과 이로 인한 우리 민족의 좌절 이야기가 발해 명당전설에는 보이지 않는다. 이러한 현상은 발해가 중국을 적대적 가해자로 인식하지 않았다는 것을 의미한다.
발해 축성설화에는 지배집단의 행패로 인한 백성들의 비극적인 죽음 이야기가다양한 내용으로 전개되어 있다. 축성으로 인한 백성들의 비극적인 참상 이야기가 많은 것은 발해 백성 가운데 고구려계 유민보다 이민족이 더 많았기 때문으로보인다.
백성의 무용담에는 여성들의 활약상이 부각되어 있다. 여성들의 활약상은 무능한 남성 지배집단에 대한 비판인 동시에 여성의 사회 진출에 대한 강한 욕망이반영된 결과로 보인다. 발해 패망의 원인을 남성 지배집단의 무능이라는 내부적인 요인으로 돌리기 위한 의도성도 엿보인다.
고구려전설의 대부분에서 조선족은 자신의 민족적 원천과 문화적 본향을 고구려에 두고 있다. 그러나 발해전설에는 조선족과 발해의 직접적인 관계나 친연성(親緣性)이 보이지 않는다. 이러한 현상은 고구려전설과 달리 발해전설은 조정과지배집단에 대한 부정적인 인식을 갖고 있는 타 민족에 의해서도 다양하게 형성되고 전승되었다는 것을 의미한다.
발해전설의 이러한 성격은 발해의 지리와 민족적인 구성이 고구려와 다른 데서 기인한 것이다. 또한 중국이 발해를 자국의 역사로 다루고 있는 현실로부터자유롭지 못한 조선족의 민족적 위상과도 밀접한 관련이 있다. 조선족이 중국과적대적인 관계와 대결을 내용으로 하는 조선족설화를 전승시키는 데 한계가 있었기 때문일 것이다.

영어초록

The legends of the Balhae Kingdom passed down to the Joseonjok, a name referring to the ethnic Koreans living in China, includes the legends surrounding Jingpo Lake, the tales of the propitious grave site, of fortification (or construction of castle), of heroism of the common people and women, and the stories exposing and reproaching the tyranny and incompetence of the ruling classes. Overall, they are mostly of historical nature, yet some of them are stories concerning the origin of the name of a place as the historical aspect faded in the course of time.
Most of the legends on Jingpo Lake are related to the origin of the name of the lake and the mirror. However, Jingpo Lake is concerned with the fall of the Balhae Kingdom and the regret of King Ae, whereas Jingpo Lake and the Mudan River narrates the tragic condition of the people due to the oppression of the ruling classes.
Sanggyeongryongcheonbhu and Palryeonseong are characterized by the sense of ethnic superiority that the Balhae people seem to have felt over the Tang Dynasty of China. Unlike the tales of the propitious grave site in Korea, there is no story about cutting off the mountain ranges by other nations and the following frustration of the nation. This means that Balhae did not see China as an enemy country.
Tales of fortification consist of diverse stories dealing with the tragic deaths of the people due to the tyrannical government of the ruling few. Somewhat different from the legends of the Goguryeo Kingdom, there are many tales describing the affliction of the people caused by castle construction because in the Balhae Kingdom the ethnic groups of Chinese origin including the Khitans outnumbered the displaced people from Goguryeo.
Legends of Balhae featuring the tales of people’s heroism highlight the active role played by women. It is a criticism on the incompetent males and at the same time a reflection of the strong aspiration of women for social participation.
Many of the Balhae legends are concerned with revealing and reprimanding the depravity and despotic rule of the royal family and the elite group. This reveals the intention to find the cause of the fall of the Balhae Kingdom not in the external factors but in the internal division and incompetence of the ruling classes, particularly in the immoral conduct of the royal family.
These aspects of the Balhae legends originate in the fact that the geography and ethnic composition of the kingdom were different from Goguryeo. It is also related to the status of the Joseonjok who are not free from the official policy of China to include Balhae in its own history. Unlike the legends of Goguryeo, the legends of Balhae do now show a close affinity between the Joseonjok and the Balhae Kingdom, which shows the limitations the Joseonjok are faced with in Chinese territory today.
