초록

조소앙이 유학기에 남긴 일기 『동유약초(1904-1912)』를 중심으로 근대계몽기에서 1910년대에 이르는 시기의 한 지식인･정객･사상가의 지적 편력을 문체론적 관점에서 검토해 보았다. 구국의 뜻을 지니고 관료를 지망하였던 구본신참의 지식인 조소앙은 일본유학을 통해 국제적 현실 정치와 동아시아의 정치 변동을 경험하는 한편 법학, 정치학, 철학, 문학 등의 근대 지식을 익혀 신본구참의 길로 나아갔다. 그 과정에서 국문은 계몽과 공론의 문체로서, 한시문은 정의 분자와 우국의 정을 표현하는 문체로, 일본어는 지식 습득의 도구로서 분할되었음을 논증했다.
한편 한일병합과 함께 국가=국민=국문이라는 문체, 정체, 신체 동일성이라는 의제가 파탄나면서, 조소앙은 한시문으로 귀의하는 한편 종교에서 새로운 가능성을 찾아간다. 이 과정에서 한시문은 동양 경전의 세계이자 새로운 동아시아 연대를 가능하게 하는 문체로서 재발견되었다. 나아가 세계종교적 성격을 가진 육성교의 창안을 통해 조소앙은 자연법 상의 자유 평등을 회복하는 행위로서 독립투쟁을 재맥락화하게 된다. 조소앙은 자신의 범신론적 일신교로의 구상 안에 단군을 신의 여섯 아들 중 하나로 새겨넣었고, 이를 통해 신-단군-이천만 적자가 주권과 명령, 육탄혈전으로 연결된 관계임을 보여주려 했다. 조소앙에게 조선 독립은 신의 명령이자 자연법의 실현이었으며, 그와 동시에 동서양과 조선의 경전에 새겨진 미래에의 약속을 실현하는 행위로서 표현되었다. 그의 유학기 일기에 이러한 지적 수련, 문체 수험이 또렷이 드러나 있다.

영어초록

This paper analyzes Cho So-Ang’s intellectual wanderings, who was a politician, thinker, and intellectual, focusing on his writing styles in the journal 동유약초 (1904-1912) written between the modern enlightenment period and the 1910s. Cho applies for the position as a government officer with a hope to save the country and manages himself as an intellectual who does not only values the old but also considers the new important. While studying in Japan, Cho becomes aware of international politics in a realistic manner and experiences the political transitions within the East Asian region. In the meantime, he learns modern knowledge such as law, politics, philosophy, and literature. In this process, his languages are divided into three: the Korean language for the writing of enlightenment and public argument, the sinographic poetry and prose for the writing of justice and patriotism, and the Japanese language for the tool of absorbing knowledge.
When the equation of the national language, the nation, and people - the unification of the forms of writing, the forms of government, and the forms of subject – was negated by the Korea-Japan Treaty of 1910, Cho focused on the sinographic poetry and prose, while finding a new possibility from a religion. In this process, he rediscovers sinographic poetry and prose, which is the world of Eastern sacred book, as the form of writing that enables the East Asian region to be united. Furthermore, through creating Six-saints-religion(六聖敎) which has a feature of world religion, Cho redefines the independence fights as the performance of recovering people’s liberty and equality in the realm of natural law. For example, in his theory of pantheistic monotheism, Cho positions Dangun as one of the six sons of God, thus showing the fact that God, Dangun and the twenty million people of the Joseon Dynasty are related with sovereignty, command, and their blood relationship. For Cho, the independence of Joseon is the command of God as well as the realization of natural law. In his idea, the independence is expressed as the realization of the promise of the future that is inscribed in the sacred book of East and West, including Joseon. Cho’s journal is the proof of his intellectual practice and the examinations of his writing styles.
