전통성과 현대성의 경계 - 현대시조의 章과 句를 중심으로 - (Boundary between Tradition and Modernity - Focusing on Verses and Phrases of Modern Sijo -)

초록

본 논문은 시조의 형식장치가 오늘의 현대시조에 와서 어떻게 변형되고 이탈되고 있는지를 크게 세 가지 측면에서 살폈다. 章의 특성과 이 특성을 잘 파악하지 못하고 있음으로 하여 생기는 오해의 상황들, 句의 이탈과 한계, 음보의 分行과 이탈 등에 대해 실제 작품들을 분석하여 실용주의적 관점에서 접근하였다.
시조의 章은 자유시의 행(line)처럼 쓰이기는 하지만 행과는 전혀 다른 속성을 보여준다.시조의 3章은 ‘3단위 의미구조’를 갖고 이는 1단위(초장) 2단위(중장) 3단위(종장)라는 의미의 3분절성을 내포하고 있다. 이를 “통사 의미론적 연결고리를 이루는 3개의 章”과 “두 구가 결합될 때 보다 큰 의미 단위의 장이 이룩”되는 점을 감안해보면 시조의 초·중·종장은 일단 하나의 완결된 시상을 가지면서, 각 장별로는 별개의 작은 의미구조와 두 개의 句를 갖는다고 볼 수 있다. 章의 특성을 잘못 이해하여 각장이 별개의 작은 의미구조를 갖지 못하는 경우가 가끔 발생하고 있다. 또한 오늘날의 현대시조는 장 구분의 표시가 없거나 불명확한 경우가 많은데 이러한 현상은 일반 독자들로 하여금 시조 장르의 인식에 심한 혼란을 가져와 현대시조 장르 확산에 부정적인 요소로 작용할 가능성이 많다. 연시조를 연 구분이 없이 배열한다든지, 한 수를 한 행으로 처리 한다든지, 각 장을 한 연으로 구분하여 시원하게 보이게 하는 방법들은 일견 자유시와 별반 다르지 않게 보이게 하여 세련되게 보일런지 모르지만 결코 그렇지 않다는 점을 명확하게 인식할 필요가 있다. 이것이 세련되고 현대적인 감각이라는 인식 자체에 문제가 있을 뿐만 아니라, 시적 상황에 맞게 이러한 방법들이 구사되어야 올바른 시적 성과를 거둘 수 있기 때문이다.句가 이탈되는 경우도 빈번하게 발생하고 있다. 초장과 중장의 경우는 ‘1음보-3음보’의 행 가름이 빈번하게 일어나고 있는데 이는 무자각적으로 사용하는 시인 개개인의 습관과 관련이 깊다. 종장은 초․ 중장과는 달리 첫 음보의 독립적 성격으로 인해 ‘1음보-3음보’의 행 가름은 문제가 되지 않는다. 그러나 이의 역전 형태인 ‘3음보-1음보’의 행 가름은 문제가 있다.
章의 겹침, 한 음보의 分行과 이탈에서는 현대시조에 있어 언어 실험에 몰두하면서 말과 언어의 사유에 대한 깊은 탐색을 보여준 류제하의 작품에 드러난 문제점을 살폈다. 그의 작품은 章 구분이 행으로 구분되지 않는 파격을 보이고 있다. 한 행에 두 장이 겹침으로써 언어의 정상적인 흐름을 방해하고 있기도 한다. 한 음보를 2행 이상에 걸쳐 분행하고 있는 것도 문제가 있음을 지적하였다.
오늘날의 현대시조는 형식 장치에 있어 늘 해체의 위험에 시달리고 있다. 해체를 강조하는 입장은 늘 전통에 대한 계승적 차원을 강조하며 자기 혁신적 노력이 없는 현대화가 무슨 의미가 있겠느냐며 새로운 변신에 대한 명분을 쌓아간다. 전통성과 현대성의 미묘한 경계 위에 오늘날의 현대시조는 놓여있다. 논리적 근거를 갖추지 못한 관습적인 사용과 현대적 기법을 빙자한 무분별한 태도로 시조의 본모습을 잃어버린다면 큰 비극이 아닐 수 없다. 본 논문은 현대 시조의 실제 작품을 중심으로 가감 없는 비판의 소리를 담았다.

영어초록

This thesis examined how the type device of sijo is being transformed and breaking away in modern sijo of today in three aspects.
It examined the characteristics of verses and situations of misunderstanding occurring by not identifying these characteristics and approached from a pragmatic point of view about deviation and limit of phrases, deviation and line separation of Eumbos (see note) etc. by analyzing actual works.
Though a stanza of sijo is used as lines of free verse, it shows completely different properties from lines.
3 verses of sijo has ‘3-unit meaning structure’ and this contains three segments of meaning, 1unit (first), 2unit (middle), 3unit (last).
Considering that “3 verses forming syntactic semantic links” and “a verse of much greater meaning unit is achieved when 2 phrases are combined”, it can be seen that first·middle·last of the 3 verses of a sijo poem has one completed poetic concept and each verse has individual a small meaning structure and 2 phrases.
Sometimes the case that each verse does not have separate small meaning structure due to wrong understanding about characteristics of verses.
Also, today’s modern sijo has no mark for verse classification or is unclear and this phenomenon is more likely to act as a negative element in modern sijo genre spread because it causes severe confusion to general readers’ recognition on sijo genre.
The methods of arranging a serial sijo without a stanza, treating a poem as a line, and making it look cool by classifying each verse into one stanza may look stylish since they do not look different from free verse at first glance but it needs to be recognized it is never like that.
The recognition itself that this is stylish and modern sense has a problem and proper poetical outcome can be achieved when these methods are used according to poetic situation.
The case that phrases are deviated occurs frequently.
In case of the first and middle, line separation of ‘1 Eumbo-3 Eumbos’ occurs frequently and this is closely related to the habit of individual poet using unconsciously.
Unlike the first and middle of the 3 verses, in case of the last, line separation of ‘1 Eumbo-3 Eumbos’ is not a problem due to the independent nature of the first Eumbo.
But its reverse from, line separation of ‘3 Eumbos -1 Eumbo’ has a problem.
For deviation of line separation of one Eumbo, overlapping of verses, problems reveled in the work of Je Ha Ryu that showed deep exploration on thinking of words and language, while immersed in the language experiment in modern sijo.
His works show exception that a verse is not separated by lines.
The normal flow of the language is also disrupted by overlapping two verses in one line.
The problem was also pointed out that one Eumbo is separated over 2 lines.
Today’s modern sijo always suffers from the risk of dissolution in type device.
Position emphasizing dissolution is building justification for the new transformation, saying that what modernization emphasizing succession of tradition without self innovative effort means.
Today’s modern sijo lies on the delicate boundary of tradition and modernity.
It must be a great tragedy if the true identity of sijo is lost by conventional use without logical grounds and reckless attitude under color of modern technique.
This thesis contained the sound of criticism without making any adjustments focusing on actual works of modern sijo.
Through this thesis, if writers of modern sijo take a cautious attitude in type devide of sijo and become more sober about their works, the meaning of this paper, which volunteered somewhat bitter criticism, would be slightly more shone
