17세기 사대부가의 종이 사용과 공급- 조극선의 일기를 중심으로 - (Paper Usage and Supply of a Literati Household in Seventeenth-Century Joseon: Focusing on the Diaries of Jo Geuk-seon)

초록

본고에서는 조극선(趙克善)의 일기 『인재일록(忍齋日錄)』과 『야곡일록(冶谷日錄)』을 통해 17세기 사대부가의 일상에서의 종이 사용과 공급 과정 및 종이에 대한 인식을 살펴보았다. 조극선의 일상생활에서 종이는 의식주용, 기록매체용, 선물･부조용 등에 사용되었다. 조극선은 주로 사찰을 통해 종이 제작을 의뢰하였는데, 의뢰자가 종이 원료를 직접 운반하여 사찰에 제공했다는 점, 제공된 원료의 질과 양에 맞춰 종이의 분량이 결정되었다는 점, 의뢰자가 닥나무 원료의 가공 작업에 참여･감독했다는 점에서 18~19세기와 큰 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다.
조극선에게 종이를 조달한 가장 중요한 공급처는 가야사(伽倻寺)였으며, 이외에도 수덕사(修德寺), 일조암(日照庵), 초암(草庵) 등 인근의 사찰을 통해 종이를 지속적으로 조달받은 것으로 나타났다. 다음으로 지방관아에 부임한 인척도 종이 조달을 위한 주요 공급처였다. 이러한 예는 지방관으로 부임한 고모부 박안행(朴安行)이 관아에서 상당량의 종이를 조극선에게 여러 차례 보내준 사례에서 현저하게 확인된다. 또한 경우에 따라 시장에서의 구입 또는 교환을 통해 종이를 공급받았는데, 이는 주로 과거시험용 종이의 사례로 국한된다.
마지막으로는 종이에 대한 조극선의 인식과 태도를 살펴보았다. 조극선의 과거합격에 대한 갈망은 명지(名紙)에 대한 집착에서 드러난다. 과거시험을 앞두고 상품(上品)의 두꺼운 종이를 찾아 고군분투하는 모습이 상세히 기록되었다. 또한 종이의 부족으로 인해 잇따라 주변 지인들에게 종이를 빌리는 사례가 보이는데, 이는 종이의 축적이 불가능했던 외지 생활로 인한 예상치 못한 일상 속 행위였던 것으로 판단된다. 또한 시장에서 식재료를 사는데 종이가 사용되거나 이동 중에 종이를 이용하여 숙

This paper is a study of the usage, supply process, and perception of paper in the daily life of a literati household in seventeenth-century Joseon through an examination of two of Jo Geuk-seon’s diaries, Daily Records of Inje (忍齋日錄) and Daily Records of Yagok (冶谷日錄). In addition to using paper as recording media, gifts, or financial aid, and so on, Jo Geuk-seon also used paper in relation to food, clothing, and shelter (for example, to wrap food, to paper the walls, to use as mats, etc.) in daily life.
Jo Geuk-seon primarily commissioned Buddhist temples to produce paper for his use, and the way this was done is decisively different from how paper was commissioned in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Joseon in that Jo himself, the customer, not only transported and provided the temples with raw material for paper but also participated in and supervised the processing of the raw material, i.e., mulberry bark, into paper. Furthermore, the quality and quantity of the raw material he supplied determined the amount of paper produced.
The main paper supplier for Jo was Gaya Temple; he was also furnished with paper from nearby temples such as Sudeok Temple, Iljo Hermitage, and Cho Hermitage without interruption. The next major source of paper was his relatives appointed to local government offices. An example of this can be verified clearly through the case in which Jo received paper on several occasions from the local government office where his uncle Park An-haeng was the local magistrate. In some cases, moreover, he sometimes purchased paper or traded something for it in the market, but this was only to obtain paper for the government service examination.
Lastly, this paper examines Jo Geuk-seon's perception of and attitude toward paper. His desire to pass the government service examination is reflected in his obsession with paper used in the exam. His diary contains a detailed record of his vigorous search for thick paper of high quality prior to taking the government examination.
On a few occasions, he would borrow paper from people around him when he did not have enough of it, which seems to be a necessary act that arose as part of life's unexpected occurrences in living in a remote area where accumulation of paper was not possible. Furthermore, records of Jo's usage of paper to buy groceries at the market or to pay for room and board during his travels provides verification of the fact that paper was also used as currency in kind in seventeenth-century Joseon.
