작곡가의 관점으로 보는 최옥산 최옥산류 가야금산조를 중심으로 (Choi Ok-san as a Composer : Focused on Choi Ok-san School of Gayageum Sanjo)

초록

1890년경 김창조에 의해서 만들어진 것으로 알려져 있는 가야금산조는
그 음악형식에 대한 깊은 연구가 이루어지지 않았던 초기에는 시나위음악의 변형
내지는 즉흥음악 정도로 인식되었다. 그러나 현재 산조는 전통음악 장르 중에서
그 어느 것보다도 기악독주곡 양식을 이룬 대표적 장르로 꼽히고 형식이 뚜렷한
음악이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이것을 작곡의 관점으로 바라보는 시각은 본인이 아
는 한 그간 제기되지 않았다. 40여 분이나 되는 산조 한 바탕이 그저 즉흥성에 의
해서만 흘러가듯 연주되는 것은 아니다. 여기에 장단이나 음구조 등이 음악형식을
이루는 매우 중요한 역할을 한다. 본 논문에서는 위의 조건 이외에 선율의 짜임이
나 그 기법들을 작곡의 관점으로 바라보는데 초점을 맞추었다. 최옥산류 가야금산
조에서 전통연주가들이 어떠한 방식으로 가락을 짜나갔는가를 살펴봄으로써 구전음악에 나타나는 작곡 기법을 찾고자 했고 더불어 연주가가 아닌 작곡가로 최옥산
을 조명하고자 하였다. 그 분석의 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다.
① 종지기능을 하면서 동시에 선율이동의 뼈대가 되는 ‘기둥선율’들이 단락 사이
에 배치되어 있는 점, ② 선율의 진행 또는 선율의 마무리 등으로 각각 다른 성격
의 선율들로 구분하게 되는 예, ③ 옥타브 관계로 선율구도를 이뤄 음양의 대비가
반영되어 있는 것으로 보이는 경우, ④ 한 장단이나 두 장단 내에서 또는 두각씩
엄격하게 짝지어 문답으로 대비를 이룬 경우, ⑤ 계면조 음계 가운데 우조 음계로
전조하거나, 장 2도 전조, 또는 두 개 본청을 동시적으로 사용하여 선율을 짜 나가
는 예, ⑥ 짧은 음형의 대비로 대구를 이루거나, 음계 음을 하나씩 거쳐 올라가면
서 드라마틱한 분위기를 조성한 예, ⑦ 선율이나 리듬 면에서 응용된 이른 바 “파
형원리”(한 선율의 음형을 점점 짧아지게 만들거나 리듬의 길이를 단축하거나 함)
의 쓰임, ⑧ 여러 장단에 걸쳐 가락을 짬으로써 장단의 정형성을 흐트러뜨려 리듬
짜임의 복합성을 이루거나 단락의 종지를 굳건하게 한 예, ⑨ 그밖에 유사한 선율
로 진행되거나 선율구도상의 공통성으로 다스름과 진양조 우조부분이 상관관계를
이룬 점 등이다.
위에 정리된 기법들은 꼭 최옥산류 가야금산조에만 적용되는 예라고 할 수는 없고
여타 가야금산조나 판소리에도 위의 여러 기법들이 응용되어 있거나 음악의 보편
적 특징으로도 나타날 수 있다. 그러나 이러한 질서를 이해함으로써 최옥산을 단
순한 연주자가 아닌 작곡자의 관점에서 새롭게 조명할 수 있게 될 뿐만 아니라,
즉흥음악으로 간과해 버리는 산조음악을 더 깊이 있게 이해하게 되는 계기가 되
고, 더 나아가 구전음악 생성원리의 터득에도 도움이 되리라고 생각한다.

영어초록

Gayageum sanjo is known began with a gayageum master Kim Chang-jo around
1890. Gayageum sanjo has been known as a variation of sinawi music or simply
improvisational in nature by earlier studies without having further investigation on
musical structure. However sanjo is the most well-established structural music among
traditional musical genres and sanjo is now understood as music with definite structure.
Nevertheless, none of previous studies considered sanjo as a composition up until
recently.
A word "improvisation" cannot explain the formation of sanjo which takes about
40 minutes long. Rather, rhythmic patterns and melodic structure should be considered
importantly in understanding the formation of sanjo.
My focus of this paper is to consider sanjo as a composition by analyzing melodic
progression and compositional techniques.By analyzing Choi Ok-san sanjo, I want to investigate the ways in which artists
"weaving" the melodies and what kind of compositional techniques are employed in
music of oral tradition. At the same time, I hope to shed light on Choi Ok-san
as a composer not merely as a performer. Followings are the result of the analysis.
1. "Skeleton melody (Pillar melody)" functions as basic unit for moving to the
next phrase and at the same time functions as a cadence and is located in between
two phrases.
2. Some melodies function as continuation of previous melodies and some function
as cadence of melodies.
3. Melodies are paired in octave relations and this exhibits yin-yang contrast in
music.
4. Within one or two rhythmic frameworks (changdan), every two gak(unit) is
paired. These two gak dialogs and/or contrasts one another.
5. Some melodic transpositions are made from gyemyeonjo to ujo, Major 2nd
transposition, and two tonal centers are simultaneously employed especially in
transitional melodies.
6. Paired short melodic phrases contrast one another. Sometimes a note within
a melodic phrase moves to a following higher note within a gamut of the scale. This
ascending melodies works dramatically in building climax.
7. "Undulating principle" is quite useful in melodic and rhythmic progression.
"Undulating principle" refers to a pattern that a melodic phrase or a length of rhythm
is gradually shortened.
8. Sometimes, melodic phrases spans several rhythmic frameworks which break-off
regularity of fixed form. Thus it enhances rhythmic diversity and complexity and
helps to establish firm cadence for a phrase.
9. Similar melodies are parallelled in dasereum and jinyangjo ujo mode and thus
these are related to each other in terms of melodic structure.
Maybe these compositional techniques are not only employed in Choi Ok-sam school
of gayageum sanjo, but also in other schools of gayageum sanjo and pansori. Maybe
it can be said that this is basic principle of music in general. However, this studyhelps one to have a new perspective that to understand Choi Ok-sam as not only
a performer but also a composer by understanding musical principles described above.
I also hope one can understand sanjo music better which has been usually known
as improvisational music. This analysis also helps to understand principles of the
formation of music within oral tradition.
