초록

This thesis, dealing in Lee Haejo(李海朝), a novelist who created lots of Shinsoseol(新小說)'s in the Enlightenment era(開化期) and the Japanese Colonial ruling era(日帝强占期), is intended to reveal the background of his thought and novel creative power focusing on the undisclosed life before 1906. It is newly discovered by this thesis that he was to enter the public office in Daehan Empire, by not passing Gwageo (科擧), the premodern selection institution from the Chosun Dynasty downward, but being recommended as a 9th grade(從9品) member of Yangjiamun(量地衙門, the official department of land surveying in Daehan Empire). This fact suggests his double-sidedness that he was a member of Chosun loyal blood and also widely interested in modern knowledge at that time. He has continued to be concerned to the modern knowledge and institution(esp. of education) during his life.
Moreover, Lee Haejo has engaged in the modern school established by his father around 1906 in Pochon. Then, he resisted against Confucian order by trying to claw back the farmland of Hyanggyo(鄕校, the Confucian temple and school to teach local students in Chosun dynasty). In order to doing this, he held the agreement meeting in National education committee(國民敎育會) office with receiving help of Cho chang-yong(趙昌容) who he had relationship with in the past. Looking at Baeknongsilgi(白農實記), the archival documents of Cho chang-yong, it is certain that he helped Lee Haejo to join the committee, to hold the agreement meeting and to raise the public opinion about the modern education will. With his help, Lee Haejo could take part in the various association activities about the education and publication. Eventually, his such career spur him to create lots of Shinsoseol(新小說)'s.
