The most well known passage in the book of Malachi is 3:6-12,which mentions tithe exhortation and blessings, since this text is most quoted in the church. Malachi 3:6-12 states the promise of the blessings for the faithful tithe more clearly than any other passages in the Old Testament. More practical reason for quoting this passage often is probably that we can hear what we want to hear from this passage. Is it a proper understanding of Malachi's exhortation of tithe? What is he doing by encouraging to offer the faithful tithe? What does tithe mean to God's people and what is it for? This article attempts to answer these questions by presenting the theological meaning of tithe in the book of Malachi.
First, the analytical trends and the meaning of Malachi's tithe exhortation will be reviewed. Second, the structure of the book of Malachi will be discussed, which is the basis of the exegetical analysis. Third, the pericope of tithe exhortation passage will be demarcated (3:6-12 vs. 3:7-12).
Fourth, the tithe passage will be exegeted in relation to the flow of the book of Malachi. Fifth, the theological meaning of Malachi's tithe exhortation will be given on the basis of the foregoing analyses and discussions. This article claims that Malachi's tithe exhortation is not a propositional command which creates the formula that offering title must entail sure, abundant blessings as promised, but a relational command that encourages to maintain the renewal of the covenantal relationship with Yahweh. In other words, Malachi's tithe exhortation is relational between Yahweh and his people as well as between man and man. The preliminary premises for this thesis are (1) tithe exhortation must be understood in the context of the covenantal relationship between Yahweh and his chose people, and (2) tithe exhortation must be analyzed in relation to the related passages in the book of Malachi, not isolated from the book.
