초록

이 논문은 중종 조 勳舊 관료 蔡紹權의 생애와 정치 활동을 살펴본 것이다. 성종 조 등장한 士林派는 勳舊派와 갈등하였고 士禍를 겪기도 했지만, 끝내 정치 주도권을 잡게 된다. 이에 따라 역사 변화의 주체로서 개별 사림파 인사는 많은 연구가 이루어졌지만, 훈구 관료는 그리 주목받지 못하였다. 따라서 이 시기 정치 세력의 전개 양상과 변화를 보다 입체적으로 살펴보기 위해 채소권과 같은 훈구 관료의 정치 활동과 현실 인식도 주목할 필요가 있다. 채소권의 仁川蔡氏 가문은 조선 초 鉅族은 아니지만, 꾸준한 사환을 통해 정치적 입지를 확보해 나갔다. 채소권은 중종 즉위와 함께 관직 생활을 시작하였다. 그가 뚜렷한 정치적 행보를 보인 시기는 기묘사화 직후이다. 이때 채소권은 臺諫으로 있으면서 현량과의 공정성 문제와 인사 전횡을 내세워 강경 사림을 공격하는 데 앞장섰다. 이후 권신과 척신이 득세하게 되는데, 채소권은 김안로의 처남이었지만, 그와 거리를 두며 정치적으로 특정 세력에 경도되지 않았다. 이러한 경향은 훈구 관료부터 영남 사림파에 이르기까지 채소권이 맺었던 폭넓은 교유관계에서 잘 드러난다. 온건한 정치 행보를 보이면서도 뚜렷한 현실 인식을 바탕으로 정치 개혁을 구상하였는데, 이는 假傳體 소설 <花王傳>과 <公論賦>를 통해 확인할 수 있다. 그중 <화왕전>은 폭정으로 민생이 도탄에 빠지고, 간신과 외척이 득세하여 결국 나라를 읽고 마는 花王의 이야기로서 국왕이 경계할 바를 제시한 것이다. <공론부>는 올바른 공론으로 나라를 다스리기 위해 국왕과 신하가 가져야 할 자세를 제시하고 있는데, 특히 붕당의 폐단을 지적해 놓았다. 두 작품 모두 중종 연간 기묘사림과 훈구파의 갈등, 권신 및 척신 간의 대립, 척신의 득세라는 당시의 정치 현실이 반영된 것이다.

This paper examines the life and political activities of ChaeSogwon, a Hungu official during the reign of King Jungjong(中宗) of Joseon. The Sarim (士林) faction, which emerged during the reign of King Seongjong (成宗), came into conflict with the Hungu faction, endured Sahwa (士禍), and ultimately secured political dominance. Consequently, extensive research has been conducted on individual Sarim figures as agents of historical change, whereas Hungu officials have received comparatively less scholarly attention. To develop a more comprehensive understanding of the political developments and transformations of this period, it is crucial to examine the political activities and ideological perspectives of Hungu officials such as Chae Sogwon. Chae Sogwon’s Incheon Chae clan (仁川蔡氏) was not among the most powerful elite families (鉅族) of early Joseon, yet it steadily expanded its political influence through continuous government service. He embarked on his official career following King Jungjong’s ascension to the throne. His most prominent political actions occurred in the aftermath of the Gimyosahwa (己卯士禍), during which he served as a Daegan (臺諫) and actively led the attack on radical Sarim figures, citing concerns over fairness in the Hyeollyanggwa (賢良科) selection process and personnel monopolization. As the Sarim faction weakened, power shifted toward influential ministers and royal in-laws. Despite being the brother-in-law of Kim Anro (金安老), one of the most influential figures of the period, ChaeSogwon deliberately distanced himself from Kim’s political faction and maintained an independent stance. This tendency is further reflected in his extensive network of relationships, spanning from Hungu figures to Sarim scholars of Yeongnam, demonstrating his broad political connections. While adopting a moderate political approach, Chae Sogwon maintained a clear vision for political reform, which is evident in his works such as the pseudo-historical novel Hwawangjeon (花王傳) and Gongronbu (公論賦). Among these works, Hwawangjeon narrates the downfall of a ruler, Hwawang, who leads the nation to ruin due to tyranny, corruption, and the unchecked influence of treacherous officials and royal in-laws. This story serves as a cautionary tale for the monarch, highlighting the dangers of misrule. Gongronbu, on the other hand, emphasizes the role of public discourse in governance and outlines the proper relationship between the king and his officials, particularly criticizing the destructive nature of bundaeng (朋黨). Both works reflect the complex political landscape of King Jungjong’s reign, characterized by conflicts between the Sarim and Hungu factions, factional rivalries among influential ministers, and the increasing consolidation of power by royal in-laws. By analyzing Chae Sogwon’s political activities and intellectual contributions, this study provides deeper insight into the intricate dynamics of political power during the mid-Joseon period and highlights the role of Hungu officials in shaping political developments.
