초록

The open etagere is the closest to the modern design in Korean traditional wooden furniture. The beautiful proportions and blank spaces of the open etagere have been loved as simple and elegant furniture since the Joseon Dynasty. The ancestors created a simple structure and the proportionality of efficient split faces with minimum skills and materials of the open etagere, which influences on a lot of modern designers. Various ways to correctly grasp the value of traditional furniture could be deliberated to reinterpret in modernization of the open etagere.
Therefore, this study states the definition and the feature of the open etagere in the Joseon Dynasty. It investigates and organizes by characteristics of the contemporary design cases that adapted the latest life style with appropriate functions, materials, and manufacturing methods. It aims to propose furniture design utilizing the open etagere that contributes to the success of the traditional furniture, which connects the past and the present and its popularization. Also, it can be an opportunity to inform the identity of Korean contemporary furniture.
