초록

이글은 현대시조문학사에서 동시조의 맥을 전수해온 동시조의 개척자 백수(白水) 정완영(鄭椀永, 1919~2016)의 동시조에 나타난 고향의식 전개 양상을, 세 권의 동시집을 통해 살폈다. 정완영은 근현대시조문학사에서 동시조가 가진 문학적 장벽과 동시조에 대한 작가들의 편견에도 불구하고 동심을 시조 형식에 지속적으로 담아온 시조시인이다. 또한 그는 16권의 시조집을 발간하며 3,000여 수의 시조를 남겼는데, 이 중 시집 4권이 동시조집이라는 점이다. 이같이 한국시문학사를 통틀어 정완영과 같이 동시조를 창작해 온 작가는 찾아 볼 수 있는 바, 근현대문학사에서 동시조의 맥을 이어온 한국의 ‘동시조의 선구자’라고 할 만 하다. 이에 이 연구는 그간 시조로 국한되어 온 그의 논의를 동시조로 확장시켜 전개하고자 했다.
고향의식을 중심으로 탐구한 정완영의 동시조는 과거로부터 현시된 유년의 시공간이 시조 형식과 동화되는데, 주된 동시조의 모티브가 고향을 통한 시적 상상력으로 각 시집 전편에 있다는 것이다. 이것은 고향 상실로 인한 결핍과 부재가 현존하는 가운데에서 현실에서의 회의와 부정으로 고향을 회구하는 것이 아니라 이상과 현실 사이 내재적 성찰로서 과거의 자아를 현실로 소환되고 있다.
연구방법으로 정완영의 시조집 중 1979년 출간한 『꽃가지를 흔들 듯이』부터 『엄마 목소리』(1998), 『내 손녀 연정에게』(2005), 『가랑비 가랑가랑 가랑파 가랑가랑』(2015) 등 4권이 동시조집인 것을 볼 때, 그가 동시조와 관련하여 남다른 동심에의 사유와 창작 열정을 확인할 수 있다. 정완영의 동시조에는 시인의 유년 시절의 기억과 고향에서 체험한 자연현상에 대한 경이로움 등이 그의 가치관 역사관, 인생관, 종교관, 문학관 등을 형성하면서 동시조로 투사되어 나타난다. 또한 정완영의 고향의식이 전체적인 시편에서 다양하게 펼쳐지는 바, 그것은 초기, 중기, 후기 등의 각 시조집마다 다르게 변화하면서 새로운 양상으로 비춰진다.
살펴본 것과 같이 정완영 동시조에 나타난 고향을 유형화할 수 있는데, 그의 동시집에서 집중으로 드러나는 생태적 상상과 생명성의 발현을 초기 동시집 『꽃가지를 흔들 듯이』(1979)에서, 전통적 의식과 공동체 회복을 중기 동시집 『엄마 목소리』(1998)에서, 원형적 공간과 고향의 회귀를 후기 동시집 『내 손녀 연정에게』(2005) 등 3권의 동시집에서 정완영 시조의 고향 의식의 변화와 양상을 탐구했다.
