This thesis analyses two kinds of reactions of Chinese church to the Korean War, focusing on T. C. Chao. The first reaction is Chinese church’s resistance against the US aggression and their aid to Korea after the mobilization of the communist government. The second one is T. C. Chao’s resignation of presidency to break with WCC（World Council of Churches）who was supporting the South Korea. Through these reactions, Chinese church showed its own firm stand under Chinese Communist Party’s early governance.
Korean War was more than a civil war on the Korean Peninsula, which was also a great impetus for Chinese church to enter a new historical period. Just one year before the outbreak of the Korean War, Chinese church was trying to gain trust from the newly-established communist government only by organizational and financial management through ‘self-administration’and ‘self-support’.
The outbreak of the war spread a series of movements of ‘Resisting US aggression and aiding Korea’, ‘Protecting our homes and defending our country’, ‘Anti-imperialist patriotic’, and people began to understand the meaning of CCP’s undertaking. They realized thought and consciousness of ‘self-propagation’were more important than organizational and financial independence. They also criticized the US imperialism’s manipulation of Christianity so that they could lessen the American influence.
Both T. C. Chao’s efforts to distinguish American church and world church from American imperialism and to distinguish political ‘Resist US aggression and aid Korea’from moral one were failed after all. Chinese church members including T. C. Chao himself had never thought that the relationship between Chinese church and world church would be ended in that way. Till now, only the Korean War-oriented ‘Three-self Patriotic Reform Movement of the Protestant Churches in China’remains as a matrix of the Christian institution in the government of Chinese Communist Party.
