Nest Environment Selection of Black Paradise Flycatcher (Terpsiphone atrocaudata)

초록

The environment around nests of the Black Paradise Flycatcher in Jeju Province and Hampyung County of Jeonnam Province (South Korea) were studied between April and November, 2009.
Tree species, tree density, temperature, humidity, and illuminance were studied as the components of the nest environment. As a result, 40 species of trees were identified in Jeju Province as nesting sites for the Black Paradise Flycatcher. Of these, 95% were broadleaf trees. The remaining 5% were Japanese Black Pine (Pinus thunbergii) and Japanese Cedar (Cryptomeria japonica).
Among the broadleaf trees, 25% were evergreen broadleaf trees. Dominant species were Eurya japonica (75.0%), Quercus glauca, Camellia japonica (50.0%), Styrax japonicus, Akebia quinata,Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii, and Meliosma myriantha (33.3%), Distylium racemosum,Orixa japonica, Acer palmatum, and Cornus kousa (25.0%). In Hampyung County, all the trees around the nests were broadleaf trees. In Jeju Province, the average temperature during this time period was 25.31±0.24℃, humidity 70.49±1.28%, illuminance 336.63±36.91㏓ at the height of the nest. And in Hampyeong County, the average temperature was 24.95±0.35℃, humidity 75.00±1.50%, and illuminance 784.50±197.50㏓ at the height of the nest. And, except for two nests, all the nests researched were close to water (17.00±4.01m, n=11). The density of trees around the nest (number of trees/m2) was 0.41±0.07. The minimum distance from a nest to the nearest road, which is considered as a disturbance factor, was 5 meters. So, it can be inferred that the Black Paradise Flycatcher prefers a place with close accessibility to water, temperature 25℃, humidity 75%, and illuminance 300-800㏓. It prefers a dark broad leaf forest for nesting,and nests should be at least 5 meters away from roads.
