초록

인성교육진흥법에서 명시한 ‘인성교육’이란 ‘자신의 내면을 바르고 건전하게 가꾸고 타인·공동체·자연과 더불어 살아가는 데 필요한 인간다운 성품과 역량을 기르는 것을 목적으로 하는 교육’을 말한다.
유교에서 인성은 하늘로부터 부여받은 인의예지(仁義禮智) 본성을 의미한다. 인성교육의 의미 또한 인의예지(仁義禮智) 본성을 회복하는 데 있다. 인의예지 본성을 회복하는 데 있어서 가장 중시하는 것은 사람에 대한 사랑이 밑바탕에 깔려 있어야 하며 실천으로 이어질 수 있어야 한다는 점이다. 남을 나처럼 사랑하는 도덕적 원리인 인(仁)을 몸으로 체득하여 인(仁)의 마음이 몸 밖으로 베어 나온 사람은 측은지심이 확충되어 도덕적 공감 능력이 뛰어나기 때문에 주변 사람의 어려움에 대해 따뜻한 관심과 사랑으로 기꺼이 도와주게 된다. 도덕적 공감 능력이 뛰어났던 남명 조식 또한 시대의 어른으로서 주변의 다른 사람이 죽거나 상을 당하면 자신이 당한 것처럼 애통해 했으며, 나라를 걱정하고 백성을 사랑하는 마음이 지극했던 인물이었다.
남을 나처럼 사랑하는 따뜻한 마음이 뿌리로 자리 잡히게 되면 주어진 상황에 맞게 마음을 절제하여 사리(事理)를 판별하는 올바름이 발현되게 된다. 본성에서 본심으로 발현되는 과정에 이기적인 계산이 개입되면 본성이 왜곡되어 이기적 욕심으로 나오게 된다. 본성에서 본심으로 곧고 바르게 발현되도록 매 순간 마음을 정밀하게 관찰하고 한결같은 마음이 발현되도록 경(敬) 수양을 해야 한다. 남명은 경의검(敬義劍)과 성성자(惺惺者)를 차고 다닐 정도로 매 순간 경(敬)으로서 내면을 곧게 했고, 의(義)를 통해 바깥 행동에 방정하도록 하였다. 남명은 공자가 중시했던 단계적이고 실천적인 학문 방법을 통해 예절의 본질을 터득시키는 교육을 중시했다.
시세(時勢)의 흐름을 정확하게 파악하고 있었던 남명은 어지러운 조정에 나아가지 않았다. 하지만 선비로서 사회적 책임은 다했다. 백성을 사랑하고 나라의 안위를 걱정하는 마음이 지극했기 때문에 상소(上疏)를 통해 당시 사회가 처한 모순과 부패에 대해 목숨을 걸고 시의적절(時宜適切)한 대안을 제시했으며, 제자들로 하여금 닥쳐올 침략에 냉철하게 대비하도록 하였다. 백성을 사랑하고 불의를 미워하며 나라의 기강을 바로 세우는 일에 본보기가 되었던 남명의 솔선수범과 의로운 기상에 감화를 받은 제자들은 스승의 가르침을 이어받아 학문은 연구하고 임진왜란이 발생하자 의병장으로 활동하면서 국가의 위기를 구하는 데 앞장섰다. 이론에만 머물지 않고 실천으로 이어지는 남명 인성교육론은 백 마디 말보다 한 가지 올바른 실천이 절실한 오늘날 인성 교육에 많은 시사점을 남겨주고 있다.

영어초록

"Personality education" stated in the Humanity Education Promotion Act refers to 'education aimed at cultivating the inner person and cultivating the human personality and capability necessary for healthy living with others, communities and nature'.
In Confucianism, humanity refers to the nature of In‐ui‐ye‐ji (仁義禮智) granted from heaven. The meaning of humanity education is also in restoring the nature of In‐ui‐ye‐ji (仁義禮智). The most important thing in restoring the nature of In‐ui‐ye‐ji is that love for people should be laid beneath and lead to practice. As the one who has In(仁), a moral principle with which we love others like ourselves, which is learned by the body, and also has the mind of In(仁) which is permeated out of the body, has the enhanced empathy and the excellent moral empathy, he/she is willing to help with warm interest and love about the difficulties of people around him/her. Nammyeong Cho Shik, who was excellent in moral empathy, was mourning like his own misfortune as an adult of the time, when others around him were dead or had funeral ceremonies, and he was a person who worried about the country and loved the people.
When a warm heart that loves others like me is settled as a root, the rightness to distinguish the reason of things from the given situation is manifested. When selfish calculations are involved in the process of manifestation from nature, the nature is distorted and comes out as selfish greed. Gyeong(敬) should be cultivated to observe the mind at every moment and to manifest a unified mind so that it can be manifested straight and righteous from the nature. To a degree that Nammyeong would even carry Jing‐Yi‐sword and Seongseong‐bell, he disciplined himself with Gyeong(敬) to straighten the inner surface and to set the outer action through Ui(義). Nammyeong emphasized education to acquire the essence of etiquette through the gradual and practical method of study that Confucius had emphasized.
Nammyeong, who knew exactly the flow of the time (時勢), did not enter on a dizzying official career. However, he fulfilled his social responsibility as a seonbi (scholar). Because he loved the people and was worried about the comfort of the country, he offered a timely (時宜適切) alternative through the appeal (上疏), putting his own life to contradiction and corruption in the society at the time, and he advised his disciples to prepare for the coming invasion. The disciples who were spiritually inspired by the initiative and righteousness of Nammyeong who had been an example to love the people and to dislike injustice, after studying the scholarship and following the teachings of the master, they became the heads of the army raised in the cause of justice at the outbreak of Imjin war to take the lead in saving the country's crisis. Nammyeong’s humanity education theory is a theory that does not stay in theory but leads to practice, and leaves a lot of implications for humanity education in the desperate need of one kind of correct practice today.
