제2차 바티칸 공의회 이후 여성 수도생활의 변화 (Women Religious Congregations response to the needs of the times after Vatican Council II)

초록

120여 년 역사를 가진 한국의 여성 수도회들은 그동안 한국 교회의 역사와 맥락을 함께 하며 성장해 왔다. 한국의 많은 수도회들은 제2차 바티칸 공의회 이후 한국에 진출하거나 창설되었는데(현재 107개 중 24개만 1962년 이전에 설립됨), 이제 많은 수도회가 중년의 나이에 이르렀고, 40-50대 중년기에 속한 수도자들이 구성원의 다수를 차지하게 되었다.
대부분이 활동수도회인 한국의 여자수도회들은 신도수가 급증하는 한국교회의 긴급한 필요에 따라 전교와 애덕 실천, 병원, 학교, 사회복지 기관 운영 등 많은 활동을 하며 한국 교회의 성장의 원동력이 되었으나, 생활양식 면에서는 수도원적이고 신심적인 면이 강하였으며, 1980년대에 와서야 공의회 정신에 따른 수도생활의 쇄신과 변화와 적응에 대한 논의를 시작하게 되었다.
이제 우리나라도 1990년대를 정점으로 성소자의 감소, 회원의 고령화를 직면하게 되었으며, 이제야말로 각각의 수도회가 공의회 정신에 따른 철저한 자기쇄신과 함께 창의적인 미래 수도생활의 방향을 모색할 때라고 생각한다. 따라서 앞으로 여자 활동 수도회들은 1) 각각 여자 활동 수도회로서 정체성과 사명, 창립 카리스마를 분명히 인식하고, 2) 세상 안에서 하느님의 현존을 드러내는 예언적이고 관상적인 소명을 다할 것이며, 3) 회원들의 연령이 높아질수록 수도회 자체 내 문제에 너무 많은 에너지를 소모하기보다 젊은이들의 필요에 귀 기울이고, 젊은이를 위한 사도직에 힘써야 하며, 4) 수도자의 자질 향상을 위해 집단적이고 획일화된 양성 대신 개별적이고 다양한 양성에 힘써야 할 것이며, 5) 현 시대의 요청에 응답할 수 있도록 수도생활에 대한 식별이 끊임없이 이루어져야 하며, 6) 신앙 가족으로서 이 사회 안에서 대안공동체의 이상을 실현하여야 할 것이다.

영어초록

Women’s religious congregations in Korea have 120 years history, and they have grown up in the history and context of the Catholic Church in Korea. It is since Vatican Council II that many women’s religious congregations have come to Korea or have been founded in Korea. Among 107 congregations that exist currently in Korea, only 24 were founded before 1962. At present, many congregations as Institution reached the middle-age since their foundation in Korea, and also the majority of their members are middle aged (i.e, 50-60 years old).
Being mostly apostolic institutions, women’s religious congregations in Korea have been main driving forces of the Church’s growth through their involvement in various works such as mission, practice of charity, administration of hospitals, schools, and social welfare institutions, which were done in response to urgent needs of the Church growing rapidly in numbers. But in terms of structuring their way of life, women’s religious congregations maintained a very strong monastic tendency, which was accompanied by devotional emphasis. It is only by 1980s that they began to discuss the issues of change, adjustment and renovation in religious life according to the spirit of Vatican Council II.
On facing decrease in numbers of candidates, which had a peak in 1990s, and the problem of aging, each congregation now is keenly aware of the fact that, along with a thoroughgoing renewal of religious life according to the spirit of Vatican Council II, it should seek and discern creatively a new direction for the future of religious life. In this context, active women’s religious congregations (1) should clearly conceive anew their own identity and mission, and the charisma of their institution, and (2) should live their prophetic and contemplative calling in a more compelling way so as to manifest the presence of God in the world, and (3) should listen to the needs of the youth and develop appropriate apostolate for the youth, rather than focusing on internal issues coming from the problem of aging, and (4) should make an effort to implement individualized formation with varied training instead of having collective and uniform formation program, and (5) should envision religious life with constant discernment so as to respond to the needs of the present time, and (6) should realize the ideal of alternative community as a family of faith in society.
