To improve the reproducibility of the impression over moist surfaces in oral structures, the hydrophobic property of the addition silicone impression materials (PVS) should be modified. This study was purposed to evaluate the effects of incorporating nonionic surfactants on contact angle, wet line angle reproducibility, and other clinically important physical properties of PVS.
Two kinds of non-ionic surfactants (Igepal CO-520 or Span20) were used with the variation of
its content (3 or 6 parts vs. 100 parts of prepolymer in base paste). Three kinds of polyvinylsiloxane prepolymers having terminal vinyl groups were used as prepolymer, and crystalline quartz and diatomaceous earth were used as filler. In addition, cross-linker, inhibitor, and surfactant were added to base paste, and plasticizer and catalyst were added to catalyst paste. While the incorporation of surfactants in PVS increased the wettability, wet line angle reproducibility, and viscosity, it decreased the tensile strength and curing speed. The Igepal CO-520 was more effective than Span 20 on increasing the hydrophilicity and wet line angle reproducibility; however it affected more on decreasing the curing rate, and on increasing the permanent deformation and strain in compression. The water contact angle and residual meniscus radius on impression showed a significantly positive correlation (r=0.900).
