절정의 정신주의와 궁리(窮理)의 언어 ―백이운ㆍ정수자의 시조 세계를 중심으로 (Spiritualism at its peak and the language of devising ―Focusing on Baek Yi-un’s and Jeong Su-ja’s world of Sijo)

초록

시조는 성리학적 이념을 절제의 미학을 통해 집약적으로 드러낸 양식이다. 시조의 형식미학은 성리학의 거경궁리(居敬窮理)의 학문적 자세와 성격이 직접적으로 작동하고 있는 것으로 해석된다. 시조는 초장과 중장에 걸쳐 개별, 차이, 감각, 갈등 등의 현상적 사실을 다루고 종장에서는 내적 집중과 응축적 전환을 거쳐 보편, 이치, 형이상의 본질적 가치를 터득하여 내면화하는 특성을 드러낸다. 따라서 시조는 절제와 절정의 정신주의의 집적태라고 할 수 있다.
조선시대 500여년 동안 대표적인 문학 장르였던 시조의 위상은 근대사회로 접어들면서 자유시에 내어주게 된다. 시조의 단아한 정형이 다층적으로 다변화하는 근대사회에 창조적 대응력을 지니지 못한다는 것이 주된 배경이다. 그럼에도불구하고, 오늘날에도 시조 창작이 미약하나마 면면히 이어지고 있다. 그 주된 이유 역시 시조의 단아한 절제미와 성리학의 거경궁리(居敬窮理)의 학문적 자세와 성격에서 찾아진다. 형식과 내용의 무한 자유와 이미지의 과잉, 언어의 과소비는 역설적으로 보편적 양식, 근원적 본질, 청빈의 언어 세계에 대한 향수를 불러온 것이다. 이렇게 보면, 현대시조는 자유시와 경쟁하는 분방한 형태적 확장과 변형에 치중할 것이 아니라 시조 본래의 형식과 내용가치에 충실하는 것이 더욱 중요하다.
이러한 현대시조 장르의 의미와 가치를 자각적으로 노래한 대표적인 작품으로 백이운과 정수자의 시조 세계를 들 수 있다. 이들의 시조 세계는 자발적 가난의 언어와 근원을 향한 절제와 절정의 정신주의의 경지를 전면에 드러내고 있기 때문이다.

영어초록

Sijo is a style that intensively reveals the Neo-Confucian ideology through the aesthetics of moderation. The formal aesthetics of Sijo is interpreted as the direct operation of the academic attitude and character of Geogyeonggungri (居敬窮理) of Neo-Confucianism. Sijo uses phenomenological facts such as individuality, difference, sense, conflict, etc. in the first and second chapters, and reveals the characteristics of internalizing the essential values of universality, reason, and metaphysics through internal concentration and condensed conversion in the final chapter. Therefore, the form of Sijo is considered an accumulation of temperance and spiritualism at its peak.
The status of sijo, which was a representative literary genre for 500 years in the Joseon Dynasty, was relegated to free poetry as it entered modern society. The main background was that the graceful formality of Sijo did not have the ability to creatively respond to the multi-layered and diversified modern society. Nevertheless, the creation of sijo continues to this day. Moreover, the primary reason was found in the elegant moderation beauty of Sijo and the academic attitude and character of Geogyeonggungri (居敬窮理) of Neo-Confucianism. The infinite freedom of form and content, the excess of images, and the excessive consumption of language paradoxically evoked nostalgia for the world of universal style, fundamental essence, and language of poverty. Hence, it is more important for modern sijo to be faithful to the original form and content value of sijo, rather than focusing on the unrestrained morphological expansion and transformation that competes with free poetry.
Baek Yi-un’s and Jeong Su-ja's world of sijo can be cited as a representative work that consciously sang the meaning and value of the modern sijo genre; because their ancestral world reveals the language of voluntary poverty, self-restraint toward the source, and the height of spiritualism.
