초록

본고는 1930년대에 『진단학보』에 발표된 논문인 <송강가사의 연구>를 검토하여 가람이 『송강가사』를 고전문학의 정전으로 간주하여 비평한 양상과 그 실천적 의미를 고찰해 본 것이다. 『송강가사』에 대한 최초의 근대적 비평이라 볼 수 있는 가람의 연구는 국학파의 일원으로서 광범위하고 실증적인 방식으로 고전 작품들을 주해하고 소개해 나갔던 그의 일련의 노력들과 궤를 같이 한다.
우선 가람은 여러 이본들 중 당시 확인이 가능했던 성주본을 기본 텍스트로 삼되 관련된 자료들을 치밀하게 검토하며 오류를 수정․보완함으로써 선본(善本)을 확립하고자 했다. 자국어 노래의 미감과 효용성을 중심으로 『송강가사』의 가치를 재발견하여 강조하고자 했던 가람은 주해 과정에서 의미 단락을 구분하는 등 근대적 문학의 장에서도 소통될 수 있는 텍스트로의 정전화를 모색했던 것이다. 1930년대에 『송강가사』를 소개하고 역사적 정전(正典)으로서의 가치를 포착하여 근대 문학의 장에서도 고전문학의 정전으로 재조명될 수 있도록 한 가람의 선구적 혜안은 앞으로의 연구사에서 반드시 고려되어야 할 것으로 보인다.

영어초록

This thesis aims to explore Study of Songanggasa published in Jindanhakbo(震檀學報) in three times during the 1930’s and analyze Garam’s critique on Songanggasa as an epitome of classical literature and its empirical meaning. Garam’s study as the first modern critique on Songanggasa parallels his efforts to annotate and introduce classical literature in a broad and empirical perspective of Kukhak(國學) school. However, his accomplishment that collectively investigated Songanggasa needs to be newly reviewed in today’s academia that lacks the interest in the direction or research on the early 20th century gasa literature.
Garam first used Sungju copy that could be confirmed among many different copies as basic text and revised its errors by comparing various materials. He regretted that there was no text with which Songanggasa could be accurately appreciated and criticized. His effort to edit the typographical errors, complement the missing phrases and provide correct interpretation of old language aimed to establish the complete version. Moreover, he attempted to differentiate himself from other critiques of the late Chosun by including his own critique in a comprehensive and detailed manner.
Most importantly Garam contributed to providing clear meanings of gasa pieces by accurately interpreting them and rediscovering the significance of Songanggasa as exemplar for aesthetics and benefit of aboriginal song by focusing on its admittance during the late Chosun. He also tried to introduce gasa, typically found in form of singing, as reading material in his critique of Gwandongbyulgok(關東別曲). He furthermore considered full-length gasa showed more literary value than sijo and emphasized its unique historicity and significance in the history of literature by providing the late Chosun sources praised Songanggasa.
In summary, Garam’s pioneering research that signalled the modern literary research by introducing Songanggasa in the 1930’s and capturing its historical value as literary archetype should be acknowledged in the history of research.
