초록

요정(料亭)은 식사와 공연 예술을 결합시킨, 사회의 지배층을 위한 식당이었다. 그곳은 유흥과 예술, 전통성과 근대성, 긍정과 부정의 가치가 착종되어 있는 혼종적이고 양가적인 공간이었다. 오늘날 이곳에 대한 기억을 복원하는 것은 단순한 회고에 그치는 것이 아니다. 기억은 역사가 될 수 있으며, 미래의 전망을 형성하고 새로운 의미를 창출하는 데에 기여하기 때문이다. 요정은 20세기 초에 등장하여 요릿집, 요리점, 요리옥 등으로도 불렸는데 이러한 명칭들 자체는 식당을 가리키는 말이다. 그러나 실제로 요정은 유흥과 진지한 예술이 공존하는 복합문화공간이었다. 요정의 운영자들은 조선의 음식과 공연문화를 재해석하고 상업화하였다. 요정은 그 당시의 신문물로서, ‘컨벤션 산업’(convention industry)의 특성을 보여주는 공적인 공간이었다. 그러나 일제는 조선인과 조선의 문화를 경시하였고, 정체되고 열등하다고 여겼다. 식민주의적인 의식은 조선인들의 정신에 고착되고 내면화되었으며, 해방 이후에도 한국사회에 여전히 존재하고 있다. 일본/조선, 근대/전근대, 지배/종속, 우/열의 이분법은 요정에도 적용되어, 이 이분법 속에서 요정은 전근대적인 봉건성과 낙후성의 이미지를 갖게 되었다. 한복을 입은 기생은 조선과 그 문화에 대한 환유적인 이미지가 되었다. 기생은 식민지 조선을 나타내는 인식적인 표식이었던 것이다. 요정은 부도덕하다고 규정된 존재인 기생을 연상시켰다. 그러나 기생이라 호명된 여성들은 실은 가부장제 가족주의 하에서 가족들을 위해 헌신했던 이들이었고, 남성들의 도덕적 문란에 대한 책임을 억울하게 떠안은 희생양들이었다. 이들이 기생이라는 오명 속에서 숙련시켜온 예술적 전문성은 경제 자본과 상징 자본의 획득 수단이 되었다. 그러나 그것은 때로는 과거 속에 묻어두고 싶은 오명을 들추어 확인시키는 낙인이기도 하였다.

영어초록

Yojungs were restaurants that combined performing-arts with dining for the social elite. They were mixed and ambivalent spaces in which entertainment and art, tradition and modernity, and positive and negative values were entangled. At present, restoring memories of these places is nothing more than simple retrospection. Memories can become history and they can contribute toward shaping prospects of the future while creating new meanings. Yojungs first appeared at the beginning of the twentieth century and were also called as yoritjib, yorijum, and yoriok, all of which refer to bona fide restaurants. However, they were complex cultural spaces where entertainment and serious arts coexisted. Yojung managers inherited, reinterpreted, and commercialized the food and performance culture of Joseon. During their t ime, Yojungs were public spaces that displayed the characteristics of the ‘convention industry’ as a new culture. However, the Japanese colonialism looked down on the culture of Joseon and its people, and regarded it as stagnant and inferior. Colonial perceptions were fixed and internalized in the Joseon mind, and still present in Korean society even after the Liberation. The dichotomy of Japan/Joseon, modern/ premodern, dominating/subordinate, and superior/inferior was applied to Yojungs as well and, within the grid of this dichotomy, Yojungs carried some images of premodern feudality and underdevelopment. A gisaeng wearing hanbok served as a metonymic image of Joseon and its culture. She was one of the cognitive marks of the colonial Joseon society. Yojungs were associated with gisaengs who were identified with immorality. Nonetheless, many a woman called gisaengs was actually devoted to her family. They were scapegoats under the patriarchal familism and have been unfairly charged with the moral corruption of men. They acquired their artistic professionalism with the stigmatic badge of gisaeng though it was a means of acquiring both economic and symbolic capital. Nevertheless, it was also a form of social stigma that brought up and revealed the bad name of gisaeng that they wanted to bury in the past.
