According to the Kodansha “complete works of Shiki”, " Shiki Masaoka leaves 1,109 enormous letters.
It symbolizes that there was much interchange with another person with sociable writer awareness of Shiki that there are many quantities of the letter. However, there is another reason. It is long-term condition life due to tuberculosis that Shiki had at the age of 21 years old. Shiki wrote a letter to various people up to a relative, a close friend, a literature co-worker, a younger student, a pupil. He talks about all one's in a letter. The letter of Shiki conveys an attack process and a progress process of tuberculosis in detail. And Shiki conveys the internal world that is worldly desires, the patheticalness of the tangle for the condition through a letter. Therefore, the letter of Shiki is proof of the literal interchange, and itself is another expression of the Shiki literature.
This report considers an attack and a progression of it process of tuberculosis through 1,109 letters which Shiki left. In addition, in the process, Shiki accepts illness in what kind of form and considers it whether he overcame it. The consideration method is separated at attack time, at the progress time, at the reporter era, at the sickbed time of later years and considers it.
