여성혐오의 관점에서 본 여성영웅소설 －〈정수정전〉을 중심으로 － (Heroine Novel Jeongsujeongjeon from the perspective of Misogyny)

초록

조선후기 여성영웅소설의 주인공은 문무에 출중한 최고의 관료이자 장군으로서 이른바 ‘여성 리더’로서 형상화된다. 여성들이 리더가 되고자 할 때 남성이 느끼는 적대감은 비난, 혐오, 시기심과 관련이 있다. 이와 관련한 적대적 언행을 통칭해 ‘여성혐오’라고 부를 때 일반적인 의미의 여성혐오는 여성을 여성이라는 이유로 증오하는 경향을 보이는 여성혐오자 개개인의 속성을 가리키며, 구조적인 의미의 여성혐오는 가부장제의 규범, 기대, 통치 이데올로기를 단속하고 강요하는 사회적 환경의 속성을 가리킨다. 여성영웅소설의 주요 작품 가운데 하나인 〈정수정전〉은 여성의 활약 및 남주인공과의 갈등이 두드러지는 작품이기에, 여성혐오의 징후들이 다른 작품에 비해 선명하게 드러난다. 우선 여성영웅의 주변 인물들은 여성영웅을 ‘의무를 다하지않는 여성’으로 간주한다. 주인공 정수정은 가정 내에서 도덕적 조력의 의무를 다하지 않음으로인해 주변 인물들의 비난 혹은 조롱의 대상이 된다. 남성들은 주로 혐오 발화를 통해 남성이 전유한 공간인 조정과 전장에서 활약하는 정수정에게 가사노동의 의무와 아내의 역할을 상기시킨다. 한편 여성영웅소설의 두 주인공은 작품의 ‘세계관’에서 가장 탁월한 두 인물이며 따라서가장 치열한 경쟁 상대이다. 남주인공은 여주인공을 자신보다 더 성공한 경쟁자로 여긴다. 〈정수정전〉의 장연은 정수정이 자신보다 높은 직책을 담당하고, 큰 공을 세우는 것을 끊임없이 질시하며 갈등을 유발한다. 두 사람은 전장에서 공개적 굴욕을 면제받고 체면, 자존심, 평판, 존경등을 취할 수 있는 희소한 가치를 다툰다. 혼인 후의 정수정은 ‘도덕적 지원자’의 역할에 충실하여 시어머니를 공경하고 남편의 다른 아내들과 화목한 관계를 유지하기 위해 노력한다. 장연은다른 사람 앞에서 정수정을 비난하고 집단적으로 따돌리는 행위를 통해 전장에서 받은 수모를되돌려주는데, 이는 혐오가 여성의 사회적 활동을 제약하고 가부장제가 할당한 가정 내의 임무로 여성을 복귀시키는 과정을 보여주는 것이다. 그럼에도 정수정이 가정 밖에서의 삶을 끝까지유지하고 아들이 어머니의 유산을 계승하여 외손봉사(外孫奉祀)를 한다는 사실은 여성혐오에완전히 굴복하지 않는 여성 주체의 가능성을 제시하고 있다.

영어초록

The protagonist of the heroine novel in the late Joseon Dynasty is the official and general in high places, represented as a so-called ‘women leader’. Martha Nussbaum, American philosopher, saw that the hostility felt by men when women tried to become leaders was related to criticism, hatred, and envy. These hostile words and actions are able to collectively called ‘misogyny’, Misogyny in a general sense means the nature of individual misogynists who tend to hate women because they are women, and misogyny in a structural sense can be understood as an attribute of the social environment that regulates and enforces the norms, expectations, and governing ideologies of patriarchy. Jeongsujeongjeon, one of the main works of the heroine novel, is a work that highlights women’s activities and conflicts with the hero, so signs of misogyny are more evident. First of all, the characters around the female hero regard the female hero as ‘a woman who does not fulfill her duty’. The main female character, Jeongsujeong is criticized or ridiculed from those around her for not fulfilling her duty of moral assistance in the home. Male characters mainly remind Jeongsujeong, who comes into the male area as court and the battlefield, through hate speech, of the duty of housework and the role of his wife. On the other hand, the male protagonist considers the female protagonist as a more successful competitor than himself.
They are the two most outstanding characters in the work and are therefore also the most competitive. Jangyeon in Jeongsujeongjeon causes conflict by constantly blaming Jeongsujeong for her higher position and making greater contributions than him. The two compete for scarce values that can be exempted from shame or public humiliation on the battlefield and can take face, pride, reputation, and respect. After marriage, Jeongsujeong strives to honor her mother-in-law and maintain a harmonious relationship with her husband’s other wives by being faithful to the role of a moral supporter. Jangyeon returns the humiliation he received on the battlefield to Jeongsujeong through acts of criticizing her in front of others and collective bullying, which shows the process of restricting women’s social activities and returning women to domestic duties assigned by the patriarchy. Nevertheless, the fact that Jeongsujeong maintains her social life to the end, and her son inherits her mother’s legacy suggests the possibility of a female subject who does not completely succumb to misogyny.
