초록

이 글의 목적은 정성언의 독립운동과 그 연장선상에서 이루어진 해방 이후 활동을 조명하는 것이다. 정성언은 독립운동가이자 북한의 정치가로서 주목할 만한 삶을 살아 왔으나, 그간의 연구에서 그의 존재는 단편적으로만 알려져 왔다. 이 연구에서는 특히 정성언의 학맥과 인적 관계망 등에 주목하여 그의 활동과 선택을 보다 계기적으로 파악해보고자 하였다.
1912년 함경북도 명천군에서 태어난 정성언은 중국 연변지역에서 은진중학을 비롯한 기독교계 사립학교를 다니며 공부하였다. 은진중학교에서 만난 김학무, 김용섭 등은 이후 정성언이 전개한 독립운동의 동지가 되었다. 은진중학을 중퇴한 정성언은 1933년 5월 중국 남경으로 건너가 낙양군관학교에 입학했다가 중도 퇴교하였다. 이후 정성언은 김구 계열 중도 퇴교생들을 근간으로 조직된 김구특무대에서 활동하다가, 1935년 7월경 조선의 독립과 공산화를 목적으로 한 혁명동지회를 조직하였다.
정성언은 혁명동지회 활동의 일환으로 러시아로 밀항하고자 상해로 향했지만 그곳에서 체포되어 1936년 10월 징역 3년을 선고받고 옥고를 치렀다. 출옥 후 만주로 거처를 옮긴 정성언은 1943년경부터 이상조와 함께 조선독립동맹 북만특위에서 활동하였다. 이러한 정성언의 활동에는 은진중학－혁명동지회 출신이라는 점과 거기에서부터 형성한 인적 관계망이 결정적인 배경으로 작용하였다. 정성언은 이상조와 함께 북만주지방에서 조선독립동맹 지하조직을 건설하는 활동을 하다가 해방을 맞았다.
조선독립동맹 중앙과의 연계 속에서 진행된 정성언과 이상조의 북만특위 활동은 해방 이후 조선의용군의 만주지역 진출에 중요한 토대가 되었다. 해방 후 북만특위는 만주를 기지로 삼아 조선인 청년들을 양성하고, 이들로 하여금 조선혁명의 완수와 조국통일의 선봉에 서게 해야 한다는 운동노선에 따라 북만지역에 조선인 무장부대를 창건하고 조선인 간부를 양성하는 데 힘을 쏟았다. 이 시기 정성언은 군사 분야보다는 정치·사회 영역의 활동에 참여하였다.
북만지역에서 다양한 사업을 전개하던 정성언은 1948년 3~4월경 북한으로 넘어갔다. 정성언은 연안파로 분류될 수 있는 전형적인 인물이었지만, 연안파를 근간으로 만들어진 조선신민당에 가입하지 않고 조선민주당에서 활동하였다. 조만식 계열의 민족주의자가 축출 당한 이후 기독교 세력의 반발을 무마하면서도 조선민주당을 친공적으로 개편해야 하는 이중의 과제를 안고 있던 상황에서, 기독교 친화적이면서도 확실한 사회주의 성향을 가지고 독립운동을 전개해 온 정성언은 조선민주당에 가장 필요한 인물이었다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to shed light on Jeong Seong-eon’s independence movement and his post-liberation activities. Although Jeong Seong-eon, an independent movement activist and North Korean politician, lived a remarkable life, he and his activities have not been systematically examined in the existing studies. In this regard, this study attempt to understand Jeong Seong-eon’s activities and choices by focusing on his academic and peer networks in a more continuous sense.
Jeong Seong-eon, born in 1912 in Myongchon, North Hamkyung province, attended Christian private schools including Eunjin Middle School in Yanbian, China. His schoolmates, Kim Hak-moo and Kim Yong-seop in Eunjin Middle School, became his comrades working for the independence movement held by Jeong Seong-eon. Jeong Seong-eon dropped out of Eunjin Middle School and went to Nanjing, China in May 1933. He entered the Korean Special Group of Luoyang Military Academy and dropped out as well. Afterwards, Jeong Seong-eon joined Counter Intelligence Corps, which was mainly organized by Kim Koo-affiliated dropouts. In July 1935, he organized Revolutionary Comrades Association for the purpose independence and communism of Chosun.
As part of the Revolutionary Comrades Association’s activities, Jeong Seong-eon went to Shanghai to smuggle to Russia, however, in October 1936, he was arrested there and sent to the prison for three years. After being released, Jeong Seong-eon moved to northeast China and worked with Lee Sang-jo from 1943 for the North Manchuria Special Committee of the Korean Independence Alliance. The major background for Jeong Seong-eon’s activities was his previous affiliation with Eunjin Middle School-Revolutionary Comrades Association where his peer network was established. Along with Lee Sang-jo, Jeong Seong-eon was involved in establishing the underground groups of the Korean Independence Alliance in North Manchuria, and then witnessed the liberation of Chosun.
The North Manchuria Special Committee activities by Jeong Seong-eon and Lee Sang-jo in connection with the center of the Korean Independence Alliance served as an important foundation for the advancement of the Korean Volunteer Army into the Northeast region after the liberation. After the liberation, the North Manchuria Special Committee fostered young Chosun members, following the organization’s principle that the young Chosun members should play a pioneering role for the fulfillment of the Chosun revolution and reunification. The committee was committed to establishing armed Chosun forces in the Northern Manchurian region and training the Chosun leaders. During this period, Jeong Seong-eon participated in political and social activities rather than in military affairs.
Jeong Seong-eon, who was involved in various projects in the Northern Manchuria, moved to North Korea around March and April 1948. After the migration to North Korea, although Jeong Seong-eon could be typically classified as the Yeon-yan group, he did not join the Chosun New Democratic Party centered on the Yeon-yan group but was active in the Korean Democratic Party. In the context of the double tasks of relieving the opposition of the Christian forces and restructuring the Korean Democratic Party toward communism after the spurge of Cho Mansik-affiliated nationalists, Jeong Seong-eon was the most necessary person for the Korean Democratic party in a sense that he had a Christian-friendly as well as solid communist belief.
