초록

이 연구는『桐溪集』에 실린 제문과 만시를 통해 당대 사람들이 鄭蘊을 어떻게 애도하고 기억했는지 살펴본 것이다. 그가 활동했던 16세기 후반기에서 17세기 전반기는 사회적 · 정치적 변화가 분출하던 중요한 시기였다. 대외적으로 격변하는 상황 속에서 정온은 개인적으로도 굴곡진 삶을 살았다.
정온은 영창대군이 피살되자 격렬한 상소를 올려, 제주도에 위리안치되었다. 그러한 유배생활은 인조반정이 일어날 때까지 10년 동안 이어졌다. 인조반정 후에는 광해군 때 절의를 지켰던 인물로 지목되어 淸要職을 역임하였다. 또한 병자호란이 발발하자 척화론을 주장하였던 대표적인 인물이었기도 하다. 그는 청나라가 강화도를 함락하고 조선이 항복하기로 하자, 오랑캐에게 항복하는 수치를 참지 못하고 칼로 자결을 시도하였다. 목숨은 끊어지지 않았지만, 그는 이후 관직에서 물러나 덕유산에 들어가 생계를 자급하다가 죽었다. 그는 시대적 격변과 함께 굴곡진 삶을 살았던 인물이다. 그러므로 이러한 강력한 사건들은 그를 기억하는 매개체가 되어 여러 사람들의 기억 속에 남을 수 있었다.
본고에서 대상으로 삼은 제문과 만시는 죽은 이를 애도하기 위해 창작하는 것으로, 독특한 특징을 지닌다. 죽은 사람을 대상으로 하여 특정 대상을 상정하여 쓰는 글이다. 또한 한 인물의 행적에 대한 것이기는 하나 감정 표출을 함께 드러낸다는 특징이 있다. 그러나 실용적 성격이 강하여 관습적으로 창작되는 경우도 많지만, 동일한 인물을 두고 집단적으로 창작했다는 점에서 한 인물의 삶의 흔적에 대한 유의미한 면모를 도출해낼 수 있기도 하다.
『동계집』에는 50편이 넘는 만시과 제문이 실려 있는데, 주로 경상우도지역을 중심으로 한 인물들이 많이 창작했음을 알 수 있었다. 그가 청요직을 역임하였음에도 불구하고 관직에서 만난 이들보다는 실제 지역적, 학파적 친연성을 가진 사람들이 창작한 작품이 많다는 점에서 상투적이고 관습적으로 창작된 작품보다는 보다 진솔한 감정을 표현해낸 것들이 많을 수 있었다. 그들은 정온의 사후, 그가 겪은 사건들을 중심으로 그를 기억하는 동시에 그의 삶이 재평가되어야함을 피력하는 한편, 그가 지켜온 가치를 기억하면서 지속되기를 바랐다. 이는 그의 죽음에 대한 애도가 단순히 사라짐에 대한 것이 아니라 그가 지녔던 가치에 대한 애도였음을 알 수 있었다.

영어초록

This study examined how people of the time mourned and remembered through the Mansi(挽詩) and Jemun(祭文) published in Donggyejip(『桐溪集』). From the second half of the 16th century to the first half of the 17th century, when Jeong On(鄭蘊, 1569-1641) was active, it was an important period when social and political changes erupted. In the midst of externally turbulent situations, Jeong-on personally lived a crooked life.
When Prince Yeongchang was killed, Jeong On filed a violent appeal and was placed on Jeju Island. Such exile lasted for 10 years until the outbreak of artificial rebellion. After King Injo's Rebellion, he was pointed out as a person who kept the temple during the reign of Gwanghaegun, and served as an important official. He was also a representative figure who advocated the theory of eradication when the Manchu Invasion broke out. When the Qing Dynasty took Ganghwa-do(江華島) Island and Joseon(朝鮮) decided to surrender, he could not resist the shame of surrendering to the Orangkae(barbarians) and attempted to commit suicide with a knife. Fortunately, his life was not cut off, but after that, he retired from office and entered Mt. Deogyu and died while self-supporting himself. He lived a crooked life with the upheaval of the times. That's why these powerful events became a medium to remember him and remained in the memory of many people's memories.
The sacrificial text and mansi targeted in this paper are created to mourn the dead, and have unique characteristics. It is written on the premise of a specific object for the dead. In addition, although it is about a person's behavior, it is characterized by revealing emotional expression together. However, it is often customarily created due to its strong practical nature, but it is also possible to derive a meaningful aspect of the traces of a person's life in that it was created collectively with the same person.
It can be seen that more than 50 Mansi and Jemun were created by many characters mainly in the Gyeongsangudo(慶尙右道) area. Although he served in an important government post, there were many works created by people with real regional and academic ties than those who met in government posts, which could express more sincere emotions than conventional and conventional works. They wanted to continue by remembering him, focusing on the events he experienced after Jeong On's death, while expressing that his life should be reevaluated, while remembering the values he kept. It can be seen that the mourning for his death was not simply about disappearing, but about the value he had.
