The present paper examines Zheng Zhenduo's collection and research achievements of illustrations, and illuminates his position in the history of study of Chinese illustrations.
Illustrations contained in literary works, with their function as a complementary element to the lingual text, have a valuable status for research not only from the standpoint of art history or bibliography but also of literature. In the history of Chinese illustrations, in particular, traditional Chinese illustrations reached a developmental pinnacle centered around books of novels and playscript during the Ming and Quing Dynasties. Furthermore, China from the old times embraced the tradition of practical illustrations, in which illustrations were used along with texts as an important medium for the transfer and recognition of information. These facts underscore the significant position of illustrations in the Chinese history of books for reading. It was not until the 1930s and 1940s that modern research on Chinese traditional illustrations were initiated, concurring with the study on Chinese traditional prints, due to the fact that the majority of Chinese traditional illustrations were created in woodcut prints. As a natural result, the collection and research on Chinese traditional prints are overlapped with those on traditional illustrations. A pioneer to seriously collect and launch a full-scale and systematic research in Chinese traditional illustrations, Zheng Zhenduo takes an outstanding position in the history of the research on Chinese illustrations. Nevertheless, the study on his collection and research on illustrations remain insignificant not only in Korea but also in China or Japan.
