초록

The purpose of this study is to clarify the phonological relationship between two noun-forming suffixes, -ment and -ness, and their bases in English. This study collected the data from the Carnegie Mellon University Pronouncing Dictionary and analysed the phonological distribution of the two suffixes with their bases by using Observed/Expected frequency analysis. The following summarizes our findings: (i) the words ending in labial consonants are more likely to be attached by the suffix -ment than -ness, (ii) the words including base-final dorsals favor -ness instead of -ment, and (iii) in the case of coronal consonants, the O/E ratios of the two suffixes are almost same, resulting in no bias between them. In order to formalize this asymmetric tendency, this study employs the Maximum Entropy grammar model (Hayes and Wilson 2008). As a result, we can observe that the modeling by Maxent grammar mirrors the asymmetric tendency of the two suffixes, -ment and -ness.
