시각적 복잡성 연구고찰Ⅰ -문헌고찰을 통한 문제점 도출- (Research on the Visual Complexity Ⅰ -problems through literature review-)

초록

본 연구는 일반 대중들이 공통적으로 선호하는 미가 존재한다는 가설에서 출발하며, 그 실마리를 시각적 복잡성에서 찾는 연구이다. 본 연구의 궁극적인 목적은 디자이너가 시각적 복잡성을 조절하는 것을 가능하게 할 수 있는 구성요소를 규명하는 것이다. 이를 위해 산발적으로 분포해 있는 시각적 복잡성에 대한 문헌을 고찰하여 기존 연구의 문제점을 도출하고자 한다. 먼저, 2장은 실험ž형태ž환경ž예술심리학에서 복잡성과 관련된 이론을 정리하였다.
3장은 구성 원리와 평면, 입체(건축과 가로)의 복잡성 측정방법을 논문 중심으로 고찰하고, 질서와 시각적 복잡성의 상관관계를 문헌을 통해 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 대중들이 시각적 복잡성의 중간단계를 선호하는 것과 향후 구성요소 선정 시 부분보다는 총체적으로 지각하는 요소들에 대한 접근이 필요한 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 다양성ž질서와 시각적 복잡성과의 관계 규명과 함께 구성요소의 심도 있는 연구를 위해 새로운 연구방법이 절실하게 요구된다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 기존 연구의 문제점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 복잡성에 대한 정의는 아직까지 합의가 없었다.
둘째, 복잡성 자체에 대한 연구가 부족하다. 셋째, 연구방법의 주류가 엔트로피를 기반으로 하는 계량적 방법이다.
넷째, 시각적 복잡성과 매우 긴밀한 관계인 질서에 대한 연구가 없다. 다섯째, 시각적 복잡성을 판단한 설문 참여자들이 하나의 자극에만 노출됐다. 본 연구의 주제는 국내ž해외 모두 관련 자료가 부족하고, 평면ž입체를 통합하여고찰한 연구도 거의 없다. 특히 국내 연구 자료는 매우 부족하여 후속연구자에게 매우 유용한 참고자료가 될 것으로 확신한다.

영어초록

This study starts from the hypothesis that there is a common favorite among the general public. Ilook for the clues in the visual complexity. The ultimate goal of this study is to identify thecomponents that enable the designer to control the visual complexity. For this purpose, theliterature on visual complexity distributed sporadically is reviewed and draw out the problems ofadvance research. First, the theory related to complexity is summarized in experiment, Gestalt,environment, and art psychology. Next, the composition principles and measurement methods ofvisual complexity are discussed. The results of the previous studies showed that the publicpreferred the medium level of visual complexity and that when studying the components of thefuture, they need access to overall perceived elements rather than parts. In addition, it was foundthat a new research method is required for studying the components together with therelationship between order and visual complexity. The problems of the advance research throughpsychology and measurement method are as follows. First, the definition of complexity is notcomplete. Second, there is a lack of research on complexity itself. Third, the mainstream of theresearch method is based on entropy. Fourth, there is no research on order, which is very closelyrelated to visual complexity. Fifth, survey participants who judged visual complexity wereexposed to only one stimulus. The subject of this study is lack of related data both in Korea andabroad, and there are few studies that integrated pattern and three-dimensional. In particular,this study will be applied to follow-up researchers in situations where domestic data on visualcomplexity is very scarce.
