시진핑시대, 중국 전통문화의 재정립과 문제점 (An Examination of the Re-establishment and Issues of Traditional Chinese Culture in the Xi Jinping Era)

초록

시진핑 정부가 추진하는 정책 아래, 중국의 전통문화는 단순히 과거부터 전승된 유무형의 문화유산을 의미하는 것이 아니라, 중국의 사회주의 체제와 긴밀하게 연결된 요소로 재정립되고 있다. 중국의 전통문화는 고유의 것이지만, 그중 현재 사회주의 체제와 사회 발전에 도움이 되는 요소를 추출해 마르크스주의에 접목하고, 또 이를 정치적 목적으로 국정 운영에 적극 활용하려 한다는 점에서 본다면 이는 전통문화 영역에서 추진되는 ‘중국화 공정’이라고 할 수 있다. 따라서, 본 연구는 먼저 공산당 주도로 이루어지는 전통문화 현대화의 추진 배경을 살펴보고, 다음으로 시진핑이 제시하는 ‘중화의 우수한 전통문화’가 어떤 기준으로 재정립되는지를 분석한 후, 그로 인해 야기되는 문제점을 짚어보고자 한다.

영어초록

Under Xi Jinping’s administration, traditional Chinese culture has been redefined as a key component of China’s socialist system, rather than simply a collection of historical heritage. This approach selectively extracts elements deemed useful for the socialist framework, integrates them with Marxism, and employs them for governance, constituting a “Sinicization project” of traditional culture.
This study examines the CCP-led modernization of traditional culture, focusing on the background of this initiative, the redefinition of “excellent Chinese traditional culture”, and the resulting challenges. Xi Jinping sees traditional culture as essential for addressing domestic and international challenges and elevating China’s global standing. By adding “cultural confidence” to Hu Jintao’s “Three Confidences”, Xi has positioned traditional culture as a core element of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
Domestically, this strategy aims to unify China’s diverse ethnic groups by fostering shared values. Internationally, it leverages traditional culture to counter Western cultural dominance and enhance China’s soft power.
However, this approach has significant drawbacks. The CCP’s exclusive authority to define the “excellence” of traditional culture risks politically motivated distortions, such as excluding Confucian ideas that conflict with its rule. These interventions undermine traditional culture’s intrinsic value, restrict academic freedom, and limit autonomous cultural discourse. Additionally, they may strain cultural exchanges with neighboring countries that share China’s heritage.
