한국 초기청자 연구의 현황과 문제점 (The Present Situation and Problems of Research on the Korean Early Celadon)

초록

사실 韓國陶瓷史 상에서 初期靑瓷의 출현만큼 중요한 의미를 지니고 있는 문제는 찾아보기 힘들것이다. 그것은 한반도에서 陶器專用時代를 마감하고 瓷器時代로의 진입을 알리는 역사적인 사건이었다. 그 중요성에 걸맞게 초기청자와 관련된 여러 문제들은 일찍부터 연구자들의 이목을 집중시켰다. 그렇지만 초기청자와 관련된 수많은 문제들이 아직도 논쟁 중에 있다. 초기청자의 출현시기에대해서조차 1세기 이상의 시간적 격차를 보이고 있는 것이 초기청자 연구의 현재적 실상인 것이다.
이러한 논쟁의 시발점에 그 출현시기 문제가 놓여 있다고 생각한다. 이러한 문제의식 아래 초기청자의 출현시기를 중심으로 하여 이제까지의 초기청자와 관련된 연구 성과를 비판적으로 검토하는것이 본고의 목적이다.
초기청자의 출현시기에 대해서는 9세기전반설․9세기후반설․9세기후반~10세기초반설․10세기전반설․10세기후반설 등이 제출되어 있으며, 아직도 치열한 논쟁이 진행중이다. 각 견해가 제시한 근거는 다양하지만, 그 가운데 가장 핵심적인 것은 초기청자의 표식적 기종인 해무리굽완과 이른바 ‘선해무리굽완’에 대한 이해라고 할 수 있다. 특히 후자는 초기청자 가운데 가장 이른 시기에출현한 器種으로서, 근래의 초기청자 출현시기에 대한 논쟁은 선해무리굽완에 대한 논쟁이라고 하여도 과언이 아니다. 즉 선해무리굽완을 초기청자의 출현에 직접적인 영향을 미친 越窯의 어느 시기의 어느 기종과 같은 계통으로 보는가에 따라 초기청자의 출현시기에 대한 견해가 달라진다고 할수 있다. 예컨대, 9세기전반설은 이러한 기종이 월요에서 9세기 전반에 유행하였다고 보며, 10세기후반설은 월요에서 그것이 10세기 후반에 유행하였다고 본다. 하지만 근래의 월요에 대한 발굴조사와 연구에 따르면, 造形과 燔造法의 측면에서 선해무리굽완과 가장 흡사한 것은 五代時期에 유행한玉環底碗이라고 할 수 있다. 그러므로 초기청자의 출현시기 문제는 이 대전제 위에서 출발할 필요가 있다고 생각한다.
그 밖에 중서부지방 초기청자와 남서부지방 초기청자의 선후관계 문제와 관련해서는 전자가 시간적으로 선행한다는 견해가 일반적이고, 초기청자를 생산한 요장의 성격과 관련해서는 그것들이瓷器所, 官窯, 貢納窯, 私窯의 성격을 띠고 있었다는 견해들이 논쟁 중이다. 그리고 초기청자보다 약간 늦은 시기에 출현한 초기백자에 대해서는 그것이 중국의 北方窯場의 영향이었다는 유력한 견해가 제출되어 있으며, 초기청자의 소멸시기와 관련해서는 그것이 이제까지의 일반적인 이해와 달리12세기에 접어든 이후에도 한동안 지속되었다는 점이 고고학적으로 증명되었다.
이제까지의 초기청자에 대한 논의는 그 출현시기 문제를 중심으로 이루어져왔다고 할 수 있다.
이러한 연구 경향은 초기청자 연구와 관련하여 큰 문제점을 노정시켰는데, 출현시기 문제에 매몰되어 정작 초기청자 출현의 과정과 원인, 초기청자의 양상과 그 전개과정, 초기청자의 출현이 고려와그 이후의 도자문화 전반에 미친 영향 등 어쩌면 초기청자의 출현시기보다 더 본질적이라고 할 수있는 문제들에 상대적으로 덜 관심을 기울여왔다는 점이 그것이다. 이제 우리 스스로 짊어진 ‘출현시기’의 굴레에서 벗어나, 좀 더 다양하고 구조적인 시각으로 초기청자 문제에 접근할 때가 되었다고 생각한다. 한편, 한국의 초기청자가 출현하기 전까지 세계에서 자기를 생산할 수 있었던 나라는중국뿐이었다. 초기청자의 출현을 기점으로 瓷器의 생산이 점차 중국 이외의 나라로 확대되어간 시기이다. 말하자면 그 분기점이 곧 초기청자의 출현이었던 것이다. 이 점에서 초기청자의 출현은 한국 자기의 시작을 알리는 사건을 넘어 세계도자사의 전개과정에서 획기적인 일대 사건이었다고 할수 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 초기청자의 출현 문제를 그 세계도자사적 중요성에 걸맞게 인식한 연구 성과는 찾아보기 힘들다. 이제라도 시야를 좀 더 확대하여 초기청자와 그 출현 문제를 세계도자사의 담론의 장에서 검토할 필요가 있다고 생각한다.

영어초록

Actually, in history of Korean porcelain, it is difficult to find the matter which has a significant meaning as appearance of early celadon (初期靑瓷). It was a historical event to notify that the end of the period for earthenware only and to entry into the porcelain period in the Korean Peninsula. Suitable for its significance, several problems related to early celadon attracted attention of researchers early on.
However, still, numerous problems related to early celadon are in controversy. Even for the appearance period of early celadon, showing time gap more than 1 century is the present actuality of early celadon research. At the starting point of this controversy, it is considered that there is the problem of that appearance period. The purpose of this article is to examine results of the research related to early celadon until now focused on the appearance period of early celadon critically under this consciousness on that matter.
As for the appearance period of early celadon, the theory of the first half of the 9th century, the theory of the second half of the 9th century, the theory from the late 9th century ~ early 10thcentury, the theory of the first half of the 10th century, the theory of the second half of the 10th century etc have been presented, and still it is in controversy fiercely. Grounds suggested by each view are various; the most essential one could be the comprehension for the bowl with a haemuri-gup(해무리굽완) and so-called the bowl with a seonhaemurigup(선해무리굽완), which is the type as signs of early celadon.
Especially, the latter was the type that appeared in the earliest period among early celadon, it is not too much say that recent controversy for the appearance period of early celadon is the controversy for the bowl with a seonhaemuri-gup. That is, the view for the appearance period of early celadon could be changed according to considering the bowl with a seonhaemuri-gup as a system in which period and which type of Yue kiln (越窯) which directly affected the appearance of early celadon. For example, the theory of the first half of the 9th century regards that these types were popular in the first half of the 9th century at Yue kiln, and the theory of the second half of the 10th century considers that those were popular in the late of 10th century at Yue kiln. However, according to recent excavation investigation and research for Yue kiln, the most similar to the bowl with a seonhaemuri-gup in the aspect of modeling and modulation could be the bowl with a bracelet shaped foot (玉環底碗) which was popular in the period of five dynasties in China(907~960). Therefore, it is considered that it is need to start the problem of the appearance period of early celadon on this major premise.
Besides, related to problems of the order of early celadon in the southwest area and early celadon in the middle west area, the view that the former precedes in time is common, and related to characters of kiln which produced early celadon, views that those have characters of Jakiso(瓷器所), official kiln(官窯), tribute kiln (貢納窯) and private kiln (私窯) are in controversy. In addition, as for the early white porcelain that appeared slightly later in the period than early celadon,the convincing view that it was influence of the kiln in the northern region in China has been presented, and as for the extinction period of early celadon, it was proved archaeologically that it was continued for a while after getting into 12th century unlike general comprehension until now.
It is possible to say that the discussion for early celadon until now has been made up of focusing on the problem of the appearance period. This research tendency exposed a big problem related to the research of early celadon. Being buried under the problem of the appearance period, maybe the more essential problems than the appearance period of early celadon were less concerned such as the process and cause of the appearance of early celadon, aspects of early celadon and its development process, the influences on the entire porcelain culture of Goryeo and since then etc. It is considered that the time to approach to the problems of early celadon from a more various and structural angle out of fetters of the ‘appearance period’that we carry by ourselves. On the other hand, before the appearance of early celadon in Korea, the only country that could produce porcelain in the world was China. It was the period that production of porcelain became to expand other countries besides China gradually with the appearance of early celadon as a starting point. So to speak,the turning point was the appearance of early celadon. In this point, it is possible to say that the appearance of early celadon was an epoch-making event in the development process of world porcelainhistory beyond the event to inform the beginning of Korean porcelain.
Nevertheless, it is hard to find the result of research that recognized the problems of appearance of early celadon appropriate for the significance of the world porcelain history. Now, it is considered that it is need to examine early celadon and its appearance problem in the place of discourse of world porcelain history by broadening views.
