국악영재 판별의 문제점 및 개선방향 (Problems and Solutions in Identification of Giftedness for Korean Traditional Music)

초록

The purpose of this article is to examine problems in identification of giftedness for Korean traditional music and to present directions for the better identification.
Under the present educational system, the problem to identify gifted children for Korean traditional music is screening method, which is wholly focusing on practical skills of musical performance. But practical skill is not enough to explain about characteristics of giftedness. Practical skill is nothing but an indicator of giftedness. Considering the characteristics of gifted children, we need to change our thinking about identification. For the better identification, we should break from conventional subjective screening method focusing on practical skills, and need to reconsider about more objective identification tool that is able to measure whole process of musical thinking. Therefore, criteria of identification must contain musical ability, musical creativity, motivation to Korean traditional music.
Generally speaking, the proper timing to identify gifted children for music is the preschool period(6-7 years of age) and the primary school period(8-10 years of age, music aptitude of children is mostly fixed at this period). But considering our educational situation of Korean traditional music and puberty(the age at which one's voice change), I think the both period of 1st grade of middle school & high school are also proper time to identify.
The method of screening should be changed to focus on finding out real potential ability of gifted children and developing the ability. So I propose to develop the specific tools for more objective identification like Music Aptitude Test(MAT) for Korean traditional music, Parent Observation Scale for rating behavior characteristics (POS), Teacher Observation Scale for rating behavior character- istics(TOS), and Test for Musical Creativity(TMC). The tools that have high predictive validity of those are MAT and POS. Finally we need to concentrate on research and development of MAT or POS for Korean traditional music.
